One day at Amelia Island

We will be visiting northeast Fla this month and would like to go to Amelia Island.

On a brief previous visit, we enjoyed walking around and having lunch in the Historic District, then walked the beach and fishing pier at Fort Clinch State Park. Loved both of those places!

We will only have one day to visit on this trip. We love beaches.

I know the weather will be cool but we are ok wearing sweatshirts and exploring.

Big Talbot Island looks beautiful with the tree skeletons. Little Talbot Island says miles of beaches.

Are there other beaches that are local favorites? Any suggestions?

Also looking for suggestions for lunch. Casual. Cheap eats or moderately priced as long as it’s not fancy.

Big Talbot is amazing! Go to the Blackrock access and you’ll see why it’s called that, and you’ll also see plenty of “tree skeletons.”

But-

-go at low tide (check via google) or you won’t be able to get to the beach.

- there isn’t a bathroom at the black rock access and a hole in a closet at the main one.

- at the Blackrock access- it’s about a 10 minute walk to the beach and you have to climb down to it. Depending on erosion, sometimes it’s a challenge, sometimes easy.

- go to the right to see the black rock area (be careful walking on it!)

Be aware that the Fort Clinch fishing pier is gone - hurricane damage so the whole thing was demo’ed.

Good eats? Further south of Big Talbot- take the Mayport Ferry to Safe Harbor Seafood. Don’t go at peak meal times or you could wait for an hour. Check the web sites for schedules/hours.

In Fernandina- Timoti ‘s Seafood Shack, T-Rays, Cafe Karibo, Salty Pelican (it can be loud), The Patio. If Wicked Bao opens for lunch (TBD), it’s terrific!

Thank you isabill!

Big Talbot sounds like a really cool place! Hopefully the tide will cooperate.

How sad the fishing pier is gone. I hope the hurricane didn’t damage too much of the beautiful coast.

Thank you for the lunch suggestions. We ate at Timothy’s last time. It was great!

Btw, T-rays has excellent fried shrimp baskets on Fridays (and sometimes Thurs).

One place I keep forgetting about is the newly reopened Down Under restaurant just before you get to the island coming from the Yulee direction. Call to make sure they are open for lunch on the day you are visiting.

Isabill did a great job with the suggestions for sights and eats. Little Talbot beaches are anything special although they do have an inland trail that ends close to the north end of the island and you can walk the beach back, But clearly Big Talbot has the most dramatic beach due to the cliff erosion.

If you have the time you might want to keep heading south like you are going to the Mayport Ferry and go see the Ribault Club and Kingsley Plantation on Fort George Island. You can download a loop road guide and do the circular road (warning about half the route is unpaved but hardpacked so it can get bumpy).
