places to stay

Hi, We are going on a girls shopping and sunning trip. We are looking at vacation rentals but it is overwhelming and we are not familiar with Fort Lauderdale.. We are looking at the TIDEs condominum.... any comments?

We want to feel safe and be near the beach and some nice restaurants and would like to stay in the$ 1500-1600.00 price range for 10 days in November

If there are any other suggestions of nice places to stay ... please let us know. Cheers

Are you talking about the one in Lauderdale by the Sea or South Beach Miami?

I think she is talking about the one near Shooters- Tides at Bridgestone Square- am I right? I live not far from it at all so I would say it's in a nice area- you could walk to the beach some restaurants but would have to be transported to shopping- Galleria mall is about 15-20 blocks south. There are a few waterfront bars right near that building , but not much real nightlife , as it is primarily a condo/retiree area.

I just am not sure about their regulations regarding renting- many buildings require a minimum one month rental and some owners have to 'sneak in' those staying for shorter periods pretending people are relatives etc- something I would not like- but I am not at all familiar with that building's rules and it may not be a problem there.

Also have to ask how you located this rental, as there are unfortunately many scam artists out there- if it was on Craig's List I would not chance it. Most people do own places they are advertising , but they are sometimes in foreclosure or owe back maintenance fees to the condo association , which sometimes means you will not be made to feel welcome ( though I think legally you can occupy the apartment). I repeat that none of these things may be true of your particular rental, but it is important to be cautious in these times.

If you have the specific unit's number , we can look up the address on the Property Assessor's site to see who legally owns it ( to make sure that is who you are sending the deposit to etc) and whether the property taxes are up to date ( if not it may be in foreclosure and the owner has stopped paying taxes and maintenance in anticipation of losing it).

Hi,

Here is the reply I received and the website for the Tides condominium...

Thank you for your inquiry on my vacation rental(334666).

My property is available Nov 4, 2011 to Nov 13, 2011.

The apartment is in TIDES condominium, remodeled, modern tastefully decorated.

It has the advantage of direct pool access, directly on the beach. Great for families, not need to take the elevator. You can walk to the beach, pool and easy access to parking space.

ACCESS: Please note that this unit is on 1st floor, you do not need to take the elevator, there is a 7 steps stair access, though.

- Spacious and private balcony with a very nice view to the garden and pool.

- 1 king bed and plasma tv in the master bedroom.

- 2 queen beds and plasma tv in the other bedroom.

- 1 and 1/2 bathrooms.

- Big closets, fully equipped kitchen, linens, bath towels, beach towels,

beach chairs are provided.

- Free Wifi inside the unit, cable tv, telephone with calls to US, Canada and Puerto Rico included.

Great amenities: beach side pool, private path to ocean, gym, and laundry room on the same floor, valet parking, 24 hr. security and concierge desk.

It is very close to Outlet Stores, next to Westin Diplomat, Downtown Hollywood, Aventura Mall, Sunny Isles, Gulfstream Casino, 5 minutes to Hollywood's oceanfront Broadwalk which is bordered by six miles of Hollywood's famous coastline, boutique hotels, charming shops, cafés and places to eat facing the ocean, etc.

I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Sincerely,

Gips

Ok from the description , an entirely different Tides than the one up here- that is the one in Hollywood, not Ft. Lauderdale Hollywood is south of our airport on the way to Miami- I guess technically you could say it's in te "Greater Ft. Lauderdale area". I think if you look in the Hollywood, FL Forum there are many discussions of that building - I am really not familiar with it and am not sure if Hollywood would be a great location for ladies looking for night life and shopping- what is your general age category? DE Abby may know more about that area

I'll look at that Oakland Park listing, but by definition Oakland Park is a bit far west of the beach area., not a very tourist oriented area . How many in your party?

Interesting- the Oakland Park house is located ( allegedly) on the same street where a friend of mine lives who is a realtor. If there is a vacation rental on his own street ( 19th Ave ) or close by with a tiki hut near it's pool, he may easily figure out where it is- I have sent an e-mail to him with he Homeaway ad attached so we'll see. That location is west of US 1 ( looks to be right behind the Mai Kai restuarant for other locals reading this). i would not consider it walkable to the beach unless you are really good walkers.

My realtor friend knows the house, says it has been up for sale for years and he did not know it was now being rented, but does recall the inside as being nice when he was inside it more than a year ago. There is another rental property on the same street, different owners in the same situation and he has seen renters there. He and I agree that it is about a 14 block walk to the beach- the various mapping sites put the walk at 1.7 or 1.9 miles.- that is further than I woukd consider truly walkable, personally. It includes crossing a busy 6 lane main road ( US1) and going over a large bridge with a slight slope. It is very convenient to some shopping ( grocery, Target , Marshalls etc) but not high end.shops.
