We have plans that week for saint Mary's, rafting, train ride, Loveland pass and on to vail-back to shop in Silverthorne - looking for something to do the first day before our cabin is ready. driving from Limon.

Golden is a cute town. One main drag with cute shops and restaurants. You could tour the Coors brewery - that's interesting and fun. And get lunch at Woodys fire grilled pizza.

From Limon, you could go by Roxborough State Park, Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre and drive part of the Mt. Evans Scenic Byway. There is nothing intimidating about the Squaw Pass Road section of the byway. Stop at the Eagle's Aerie and Juniper Pass picnic areas on Squaw Pass Road for the overlooks. At Echo Lake, you can either head back to Idaho Springs or consider driving to the Mount Goliath Natural Area (11,500 ft.) or even to Summit Lake (12,800 ft.). The drive to Summit Lake is not bothersome but you will feel the altitude since you are coming from sea level. You can turn around at either of these locations along the byway.

My family is made up of art/history nerds so for us, we'd stop in Denver and go to the US Mint, the art museum, or the natural history museum.

Red Rocks is a pilgrimage of sorts for many teens and twenty somethings. Your kids will likely get brownie point back home for having visited even if they didn't see a show.

Boulder is a bit out of your way, but you could swing through, do a quick hike, and then do some shopping/eating/people watching on Pearl St.
