day trips from Boulder

Hello - last year we stayed in Boulder for a month. We have elementary age kids and enjoyed the normal Boulder sites. We are returning to Boulder again this August, but only for a week. While we will enjoy our favorite spots, I would love ideas for day trips from Boulder. We have been to RMNP and Colorado Springs. I'd love to go into the mountains. I don't mind driving a couple of hours each way. Would love some suggestions! Thank you.

MT Evans, Guanella Pass, Summit County all doable. Also check out Brainard Lake but get there very early on a weekday.

Add Golden Gate Canyon State Park and Lookout Mountain to the list.

To visit Mount Evans from Boulder, enter the byway near Bergen Park and exit by way of Idaho Springs. Along the Squaw Pass Road section of the byway, there are two nice overlooks at the Eagle's Aerie and Juniper Pass picnic areas. This loop from Boulder which includes part of the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway makes a nice trip.

In conjunction with the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway, you could enjoy the Georgetown Loop Railroad combined with one of their mine tours.

In my opinion, the views are better along the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway if you travel from Grant to Georgetown so this is the route I would take. This route includes Clear Creek Canyon on the way back to Boulder.

Did you visit Nederland last trip? If not, stop in and ride the Carousel of Happiness. You can do that on your away to Golden Gate State Park or Indian Peaks Wilderness/Brainard Lake Rec Area as mentioned above.

Parking is usually not a problem at Brainard Lake on weekdays (perhaps Casa meant weekend.)

Yes, weekend was what should have been typed! But I have heard it is a busy place now, compared to back in the day!

It's a busy place compared to even five years ago. There are now two very large parking lots that ease the parking issues, one before the gate and one at Brainard Lake.

1. Any hike from the 4th of July trailhead west of Nederland.

2. Ouzel Falls in the Wild Basin part of RMNP. Or Lion Lakes if you want a longer more remote hike

3. Green Mtn or Bear Peak in Boulder open space.

4. Mt. Sanitas trail west of Boulder.

I would only recommend the hikes listed in post #6 if your kids are very good hikers, you like to get up very early and you go on a week day. They are some of the most crowded places to hike and parking is limited. Weekends are ridiculous.

Hikes outside of Boulder. All could be combined with a trip to Nederland.

Lost Lake. If you don't go early, take the shuttle to the Hessie Trailhead. https:/…

Crater Lake James Peak Wilderness. protrails.com/trail/279/indian-peaks-wildern…

Blue Lake. Brainard Lake Rec area (there is a fee but you can get in with your National Parks Pass). Go early. The Mitchel Lake/Blue Lake parking fills by 7:30am.

Take a gold mine tour out of Idaho Springs.

Drive up over Trail Ridge and spend the day in Grand Lake.

Drive to Lake Dillon and rent canoes.

Go horseback riding outside of Kremling. http://www.rustyspurr.com/
