Dardanelle Resort destroyed by Donnell Fire

I know many locals and visitors will be sorry to know - the Dardanelle Resort on Hwy 108 was largely destroyed by the Donnell Fire last night. The campground, lodge, and restaurant were favorites of many people over the decades, and new owners had just taken over and made some improvements. I always liked that place and I'm so sorry to see it gone and hope it can recover.

This fire is the one that has caused Hwy 108 to close. Kennedy Meadows, a well-known campground and pack station, is still being defended.

That's very sad.

It was one of our favorites to stop by too.

Here is an article from the Sonora Union-Democrat from several weeks ago, about the clean-up starting at Dardanelle Resort where the Donnell Fire destroyed much of the historic property in August. At the time of the article, the fire was two months old, had burned 57 square miles, and was 90+% contained.

New owners had just closed escrow a few months earlier. They hope to rebuild, but we all know that replacements are never the same. They won't have character and historic atmosphere for 50 years or so, and then it'll be the character and historic atmosphere of 2018, not the time when it was built. Or the first time I was ever there, which was in the 1970s.
