There's nowhere to eat, sorry. What is famous is the stretch between Beverly Glen and Laurel Canyon. It's a fairly short drive, stop where you like, there are no rules and no tips to give. You'll see spots every mile or so with parking for photo ops.

If you really want to eat somewhere near there, you could go to the Glen Center, but there's nothing up there I'd recommend and it's just a neighborhood strip mall, basically for convenience for those who live up there. Vibrato Grill is great, but a nighttime spot.

One thing is that parts of Mulholland are unpaved and or inaccessible, even though it will be shown on most maps. Generally the paved accessible part of the street runs between Hollywood and then west to around the 405 freeway.

If you want a scenic drive in the LA area, take Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway / PCH) north from Santa Monica up to Malibu. Go up to Pepperdine University (private, gated campus but usually they'll let you in if you tell the guard you just want to drive around), and perhaps shoot over one of the canyon roads like Topanga Canyon Blvd. or Malibu Canyon Road.

Another scenic drive is on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, on the roads called Palos Verdes Drive West and Palos Verdes Drive South.

The best way to take in Mulholland is between the 101 and the 405. Driving east from the 101 is better. There are plenty of places to stop and take in the views. Most of them are on the right. However, the first two are on the left. One overlooks the Hollywood Bowl. The other is the northern end of Runyon Canyon. Stop here and after some brief hikes (i.e. five minutes), excellent views of the city. I highly recommend taking this short drive on Mulholland. It will give you a strong sense of place.

After you reach the 405, head south on Sepulveda and stop at the Getty Center. Take the tram up the hill and have lunch on the patio. The food is typically quite good, although I notice they change the menu regularly.

As for a drive from Santa Monica to Palos Verde, nope. There is no scenic coastal drive. Anything close to the coast is just a mishmash of local streets. Don't bother. PCH is inland and very commercial.

As for Palos Verde, driving around the peninsula is well worth it. Stop at Point Vicente Park where the lighthouse is. There are some great easy trails on top of the cliffs overlooking the Pacific. My only advice is to stop here before noon. This park gets busy after lunch.

Its a bit difficult to get a scenic drive all the way between Santa Monica and Palos Verdes without it taking forever. Especially between Santa Monica and LAX.

From Santa Monica, I'd either take a) I-10 east to the 405 south, to the 105 west, which ends and becomes Imperial Highway headed west, or b) take Lincoln Blvd. south which becomes Sepulveda Blvd. and then you can turn west onto Imperial Highway just past LAX.

Then take Imperial Highway to its end at the beach, and turn left on Vista Del Mar to head south. This road will become Highland Ave. which you can take all the way to Longfellow Ave. in Hermosa Beach. Right turn on LongFellow followed shortly by a left turn on to Hermosa Ave. to continue south. Take Hermosa to Herondo Ave., turn left to head east, then right turn on Pacific Coast Highway. Take PCH to Palos Verdes Blvd. where you'll turn right. You can then take Palos Verdes Blvd. to Palos Verdes Drive West.

This is not the quickest drive but its at least reasonably scenic once you pass LAX.
