MiraCosta student, housing q's

Greetings and thank you for your time and expertise...

We've never been to CA, traveling from the East Coast. We have a son who plans to attend MiraCosta. We've heard (read) some pretty cool reviews of the Encinitas area, (chill, artsy, surfer vibe), here on TripAdvisor.

We were wondering if Encinitas is a good choice to look for housing for our son, while he attends MiraCosta? He's an avid surfer, and a pretty chilled out kid. Encinitas sounds like it's a good fit for him.

Oceanside is a bit sketchy in some areas at night as we were told by a friend who lived in the area(?) So we're hoping to find an alternative. We will be in the area for a few days, in about two weeks, and hoping to scout out and possibly secure housing.

If Encinitas is not a good fit... any other suggestions, info?

Thank you for the kindness of your time and knowledge.

Which campus is he attending? Oceanside or San Elijo, which is in Encinitas.

Encinitas is a very cool town. If he surfs he would love it. Like any beach town can be pricy. Also look at Leucadia, Carlsbad or Oceanside.

Inland is a little cheaper and lots of students in the San Marcos area because of the Cal State there.

This post might get removed because its not really travel related, more housing related. Good luck in the search.

While you are here you can also look in the city of Carlsbad which is just a little bit closer to the college. I assume your son will have a car while he is here.

I'd visit both areas since they all have beaches where people can surf. I wonder though if your son will get school work done if he is in a "beachy/surfer neighborhood?
