What do you want to do?

If you opt for the Oceanside Harbor area, let alone are you in a very nice location, you have more options on things to do, as the Oceanside station has Four different type of train service and a lot of different places to go.

I presume you know about the Amtrak and the Coaster service, Oceanside also has one major Train service, Metrolink, which covers much of the Southland including Los Angeles County, Orange County, Riverside County and more.

And currently, Metrolink is offering a $10 weekend pass, where you can use the system from Friday night to Sunday night all for the $10, and that includes connecting transit, such as the OCTA Buses, and the LA metro Light Rail system, which can take you to Hollywood and even Universal Studios.

Note, there are some closure in the upcoming weekends (which also apply to to Amtrak Service).

The fourth service is the Sprinter, a light rail system that goes inland to Escondido.

This is a great way to get to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, I would just opt to take a Taxi from the Escondido station, about $35 plus tip each way, maybe a bit less.

One more link, Amtrak has a great 2 for 1 deal currently, some restrictions apply, so read the rules carefully.

That is very good information but for the short amount of time I think we will stay in one of those cities and take the coaster into SD,so we would want to stay near the ocean and be able to walk to the train station? Thanks

The station in Oceanside doesn't have any hotels within walking distance, IMO.

Carlsbad has the Beach Terrace Inn, maybe. Or Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort.

There's also a Best Western near the Encinitas station, the Best Western Inn and Suites.

Carlsbad and Encinitas hotels -- all are about a quarter mile from the Coaster stations in both cities.

Of the three, we vastly prefer Encinitas. It's a quaint little town with quite a few really nice restaurants. Also think about renting some bikes for the weekend, as well.

There is the Wyndham Oceanside Pier Resort Hotel just a couple of blocks from the Transit Center at the end of the Oceanside Pier.

The Blue Whale is just a few blocks away from the Transit Center.

Stay in Encinitas or Carlsbad if you aren't bringing a car. It is possible to walk to hotels, restaurants, shops and the beach from the train station in both cities. Oceanside does have a major Transit Center but it is not a convenient walk to anything. Oceanside has a good beach but you need a car to get most places.

Encinitas has fewer hotels and no oceanfront hotel, if you want a view room on the beach, or to look at antique/junk shops, go with Carlsbad. The beach is similar in either community, but I prefer the dining and shopping in Encinitas which has zip antiques but several art galleries. I also suggest taking the train to Solana Beach if galleries and shopping are your thing as the Solana Beach Design District is walking distance from the train station, its 4 miles south of Encinitas. The Belly Up, a club which books good music is in the design district. Be aware that the Coaster train does not run late at night. Amtrak does, but Amtrak stops at Solana Beach and Oceanside only. If you plan to be out late, returning via Amtrak, stay in Encinitas as the shortest, cheapest, cab ride is Solana Beach to Encinitas.

Oceanside admittedly has the nicest beach, and it has a long pier, However, there are few hotels or nice restaurants near the train station. There are some clubs nearby that cater to the Marines from Camp Pendleton. There is hardly any decent shopping nearby, and some of that caters to the Marines.

The area around Carlsbad's downtown train station is much nicer. There are a few hotels and numerous restaurants and clubs nearby. In fact, Carlsbad has become quite a popular club spot, even attracting people from Orange County. The beach by downtown Carlsbad is very close and has easy access.

Encinitas has more shopping and restaurants and its share of bars. However, the hotels are less convenient to the train station and beach access.
