San Fran to Phoenix via Bishop/Mammoth in 4 days

Suggestions? After attending granddaughter's HS graduation, thought we would take a different route back to Phoenix than the coastal trek. Can't quite put it together. We don't like to drive more than 6 hours a day.....and we like to stop/meander, etc. We've never driven 395 - ideas?

Have you been to Yosemite?

You might want to add a couple of days to take in Yosemite Valley on your way to the Eastern Sierras.

Yes, we have been to Yosemite, when we lived in Bay Area. But we have not travelled south - just want a new, scenic trip back to Phoenix and a chance to use the fishing pole in a cool climate.

Hard to evenly divide the trip.

Maybe something like this:

San Francisco:

via Sacramento, South Lake Tahoe, Mono Lakes, Mammoth Lakes

Day 2: via Death Valley (may be getting hot now), to Las Vegas

Day 3: via Hoover Dam, to Lake Havasu City, drive along the Colorado River.

Day 4: to Phoenix

thanks, Happyfeet, but we have done Tahoe ( love it) a Vegas (not so much) and we go to Laughlin fairly often....so.....maybe we'll be going back to original coastal plan.....which is always fantastic.

Ok, folks - to clarify, what I want to know is, will we have a scenic drive as we go south and head to Barstow to spend the night before heading home to Phoenix? We know if we take the coastal route it will be cool and pretty.

Cross over the Sierra on one of the passes you haven't done before (e.g. Sonora Pass, Ebbetts Pass), then head south on 395 (stop at Bodie ghost town, Mammoth, Devils Postpile, maybe Bristlecone Pines) then head to Phoenix? If you don't want to do Death Valley, you can keep heading east from the ancient Bristlecone Pines, then head south.

Yeah I take 395 to go fishing in Bishop. I think it is scenic. I like it. If you don't want the typical coastal route that tourists take, why not explore? June is still kind of ok temperature wise.

Be careful when driving through small town. Watch your speed and make complete stops at the sign. Some small towns get extra funding that way.
