From SF to Berkeley and back

Hi,

We'll be in SF for about a week and would like to dine at Chez Panisse on a Saturday. We have been trying to decide whether we should come into Berkeley around midday to tourist around a bit there before the dinner (the dinner will be presumably at 8.30pm). We will not a have car and will have to do most of this sightseeing and stuff on foot or with public transportation or cab. Is it worthwhile to do this? Or, would we better off coming later in the afternoon nearer to the dinner time and just wonder around a bit then?

Second question, is BART safe to arrive into Berkeley? At least before 8.30 pm? Would we be streching our luck to try to take BART back into SF after 10 pm? Same goes for UBER (in terms of safety).

Thanks a lot.

Hundreds of thousands of people go from Berkeley and the East Bay to SF and back by BART. So you are not alone and please go check Berkeley out early and take BART back

UBER is fine as well. It depends on the actual driver does it not. How can someone on a forum day if your UBER driver is a safe driver or not ?

If you are going to Berkeley to explore the campus there, you will NOT want a car. BART station is very close to the campus so easy to walk to it and explore. Parking is hard to get on campus and for the most part it is a pedestrian walking campus.

For Shattuck Avenue, there is the F Bus you can take from Chez Panisse to the Bart station if you decide not to walk. (Note: Shattuck Avenue is where the station is and there are usually a lot of people out and about all hours of the day and night.)

BART, Berkeley to SF is fine, even later.

Chez Panisse to Downtown Berkeley is just about a half mile (1km).

The walk from Downtown Berkeley BART Station to Chez Panisse is about 2/3-mile. It's easy, flat, and safe, and there are some interesting storefronts if you decide to wander around before dark. The area around Chez Panisse isn't called the Gourmet Ghetto for nothing!

If you come early, the most obvious route to be a tourist is through downtown, across the UC Berkeley campus, and around the Telegraph Avenue area. All of it is perfectly safe, even at night, but don't be surprised by the number of homeless people you come across.

If you end up in the South of Campus (Telegraph Avenue) area and don't want to walk all the way to Chez Panisse, you can easily request a ride using Uber or Lyft. Sidecar is available too, but there typically aren't as many cars available at any one time. Taxis tend to sit outside BART stations and are not usually driving around town looking for fares, so I recommend Uber, Lyft, or Sidecar instead.

To clarify previous posts, you would want to use AC Transit Routes 7 or 18 to go directly to Chez Panisse. (Both can be caught near the BART station.) The F line runs to/from SF and stops a few blocks from Chez Panisse, as well as in downtown and all around campus, which might be a nice way to see the landscape (Bay Bridge, etc.) since BART is underground most of the way.

If this were me, I would do this: take the F bus from SF to Berkeley, check out campus, downtown, and/or south of campus, and then walk or Uber/Lyft to the restaurant. Afterwards, I would walk or Uber/Lyft back to the BART station if it's before midnight. After midnight, I would Uber/Lyft all the way back to SF.

P.S. Sorry for the late response. I was on vacation. :)

Hello all,

Thanks a lot for the feedback. In the end, we took the BART from SF to Berkeley and explored the area as much as we possibly could on foot and UBERed back.

Many thanks again!
