Paying for hotel in Bolivars

Hi All,

Does anyone have recent experience of paying for hotels in Bolivars rather than US dollars? I know a law was passed forcing tourists to pay in dollars but just wondering if this is being enforced?

Depending on the hotel/posada. The bigger or chain hotels it will be harder for a non-Venezuelan tourist to pay in Bolivares but most smaller hotels and posadas will accept local currency.

Your foreign credit catds WILL be billed at the DICOM rate which is Bs. 1311/$1 whereas the parallel (black market) exchange is about Bs. 19000/$1.

Info_posadamargarita, appreciate the reply. Can you recommend any hotels in central Caracas that will allow payment in local currency?

PlayaELAGUA: I have managed to get a local debit card loaded with Bolivars so can avoid using my foreign credit card. Is there any issues doing it this way?

Not as far as I can see.

We have Canadian friends living here for the last 3 months and they have been using an old ID card and one of my debit cards without any problems.

They now have their own accounts so that issue has been resolved.

What I can tell you for sure is that both, the Marriott in Maiquetia and both intercontinental hotels in Maracaibo have shut down their webpage in Bolivares. They have also unplugged the main phones so no one can ask the price of a hotel night in local currency. As me and my wife walked in Inter-Maruma in Maracaibo we were quoted (verbally) 500,000 bolivares but that number is nowhere supported on official pages.
