My husband & I just got back from a wonderful trip to Argentina that included a trip to Salta and Jujuy. It was considered “low season”—the weather was perfect with no rain and nothing was crowded, so it ended up being a great time to go. This started up as a side trip and ended up being the highlight of our vacation, thanks to hiring Tracy Johnson of Northwest Nomad as a guide. After many years of travel, this was our first time hiring a guide; we have always been horrified by the idea of organized tours and felt it was worth it getting lost or missing a few things to enjoy being on our own. But we did get concerned about travel times and distances and contacted Tracy after reading the tripadvisor forums. Traveling with her was one of the best decisions we made. It blew all our stereotypes; Tracy was really knowledgeable, completely bilingual, relaxed and fun. We loved the time we spent with her and appreciate her planning help beforehand online. We did spend some time on our own in Salta and Cafayate just for the experience, but let Tracy take care of the rest. She took us on a day trip south and then a 2-day trip north to Jujuy. The whole thing was a pleasure— having her do the driving in her comfortable SUV and not worrying about getting lost or late, being able to really look at the gorgeous scenery, all the history she knew and the things we saw that we wouldn’t have found in a guidebook. She booked us an overnight at a lovely hotel (which would have taken us some time to find, since there are no signs). We took her advice about buying in Purmamarca, where the quality of goods is far above anywhere else and also had a fascinating consultation with a local medicine man Tracy knew there. And beyond all that, what really made it great was Tracy’s personality and attitude and the way she would spend all the time it took every day to see that our experience was special. We thought it was a deal, more than worth the price. Write to her website at northwest nomad, with gorgeous pictures she takes herself and she'll have many great suggestions for your trip.
