from Cape Town to Simonstown by train

Anyone experience with getting the train from Cape Town to Simonstown? Is it safe at daytime to do this?

I was on the train last week. Perfectly safe - haven't heard any incidents reported for a long time on this line. Security guards travel on the trains. Get a 1st class ticket R25 return. The stations have undergone a big upgrade - especially the main terminal at Adderley Street. Although the carriages sometimes need a good clean.

This time of year you stand a great chance of seeing whales from your carriage between Muizenberg and Simon's Town where the line is right next to the sea. The best train- based Whale Watching in the world!

Perfectly safe but suggest you do not travel during peak hours when trains are loaded. There are Security Guards on Stations and on trains but you obviously need to take normal precautions.

The trains look scruffy with graffiti but it is a safe and inexpensive way of getting to Simonstown.

And from Simonstown railwaystation to Boulders Beach?

Can we go on foot or do we have to take Rikki's Taxi?

It's about a 20 min walk thriough the centre of Simon's Town and past the Harbour Area. Lots of interesting Historic Buildings, museums, shops and cafes.

The suggested operandus for tourist is to use the first carriage if you're boarding on Cape Town station or the last carriage on any other. These cater for tourist using this line.

You would need to return on the train which leaves closest to 17h00....

Hi there

I have to agree also, one of the best and safest railway lines to use in the City or from the City. Use first class to there and back. And enjoy the walk through Simons Town to Bolders Beach and back.

Thank you from me, too, for all the replies.

I'm visiting Cape Town next week and was talking to someone today about doing this trip. From what you all say, it sounds like a perfect way to spend the day and I will do this next Thursday. I still have a Friday and Saturday to organise and would welcome any helpful suggestions.

Thanks for the information.

It's perfect as a day trip.

We took the train at 8.40 in the morning in Cape Town.

You'll arrive about one hour later in Simon's Town.

It's about a 40 min walk to Boulders Beach ( the penguins)

When returning after lunch I would suggest a stop in Fish Hoek or Muizenberg.
