We (my husband, me and 2 children) will be arriving into Liberia and staying 5 nights at Westin then transferring to Arenal for 2 nights before a departure out of SJO. We are debating on renting a car from Westin to Arenal or Arenal to SJO. If we were to drive ourselves on one of those routes, which would be more wise? We like the idea of being able to stop and see some sights on the way. Would a driver do that for us if we hired someone?
A driver will make stops for you - and - will know the best places to stop for photos or snacks or a meal.
Can you make a suggestion of a contact?
With a car reantl you have the freedom of comming and going as you please and it might be useful to visit nearby beaches in Guanacaste or to go out of your Arenal Hotel to have lunch and dinner
Of course, renting a car would give you a lot more flexibility and freedom - it just depends on what you want to do where you want to go and how you want to get there. From the Westin or in the Arenal area, there are many excellent organized tours and excursions if you don't especially want to rent a car. You can also use taxis for getting around Arenal or going from the Westin to some of the other nearby beaches such as Brasilito, Flamingo and Potrero.
You can really use a car while you are in the Arenal/la Fortuna area, things are kinda spread out and taxis can get expensive, the drive from the Westin is easy.
If you still want to use a private driver, I highly recommend this company,
I think we will rent a car while at Westin and drive to Arenal and then book tucanlimoservices if available to drive us to Xandari. We would love to stop and see some sites from Arenal to the SJO area and not sure where to go. Hoping we can get a good tour on that drive!

You can ask your driver, hopefully Luis(aka roadadvisor on this forum) for suggestions on stops on the way to Xandari. On the way from the Westin to Arenal, you might want to make a stop at http://www.photographytips.com/page.cfm/13575
Since you are renting while at Westin make day trip to Rincon de la Vieja Volcano.
you can also take a tour to see the turtles lay their eggs.
