You don't necessarily need to buy excursions everywhere. You just need to get to La Fortuna Waterfall, for ex., and pay US18 entrance fee to go down 500 steps. See the TA reviews, some from Jan. 2021 - https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Attraction_Review-g309226-d2513717-Reviews-La_Fortuna_Waterfall-La_Fortuna_de_San_Carlos_Arenal_Volcano_National_Park_Provin.html .

Arenal SkyAdventure park provides transportation, if needed, - https://skyadventures.travel/arenal/ . You can also check if you can combine a visit there with some hiking near the volcano. [There is a local shuttle from La Fortuna (schedule: https://www.arenalobservatorylodge.com/en/getting-here/shared-shuttle-from-arenal-observatory-lodge-to-la-fortuna-town/) to hike the trails of https://www.arenalobservatorylodge.com/en/property-map/ on a day pass, and you can contact them Toll Free from USA: (877) 804-7732, From Costa Rica: +506 2290 7011) to directly get the most accurate current info.]

I don't know where exactly in La Fortuna you are staying, but this hotel has a list of things to do independently, some free - https://www.lachozainnhostel.com/trip/la-fortuna-attractions-on-your-own/ .

If you want to visit Mistico hanging bridges, you can do it as a self-guided entrance ticket, but they now require all visits to be booked online, in advance, for a particular time and date. When you go to book online, it asks you if you need to add transportation, in case you are not renting a car, so you can decide to use their option or rely on taxis, which won't be inexpensive, - https://www.misticopark.com .

Depending on where you r staying and if you will have a car, you can look through the numerous reviews of places to eat in La Fortuna and area on TA, filtering them by budget, Dushes (e.g., shrimp, etc.), and other criteria - https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Restaurants-g309226-La_Fortuna_de_San_Carlos_Arenal_Volcano_National_Park_Province_of_Alajuela.html .

Hope it helps.

Have a great trip!

Kay..my suggestion is to communicate with your hotel in advance...see what they could set up for you. With Covid things become a bit more difficult in terms of shared transportation or tours but maybe they could suggest a way to join a few from the hotel for an excursion.

Easy to eat here if you eat fish. I recommend EcoTermales hot springs.

Subjectively gave you a good selection - you should have no problem as a solo traveler If you have examples of what you were denied perhaps we can give you some additional opinions.

The one item that has been frequently denied the last few months are all the shared shuttles - they basically cannot make a run for 3 to 5 hours $50 so they are asking for more travelers or they do not do the run. There are just not enough people in the country. Other than public bus, private van you might also do a one way Uber out of the central valley - you may not be able to use that method coming back as Uber is pretty sparse outside of the central valley.

Have a splendid trip, Berni

Kay,

Were you asking about local excusprsions, I.e. how to see Arenal area attractions from where you are staying in La Fortuna, like I understood your Qn, or about hiring long distance transportation, as what the shuttles mentioned in # 4, might be used for?

You would not be hiring shared shuttles operating in between many areas of the country to get from La Fortuna to Mistico Bridges, for ex. If you are not renting a car, you would be relying on taxis, or transfers offered by some attractions, or local shuttles.

Again, during the pandemic, everything operates differently, hours and restrictions change, so check directly with every place and service provider.

actually I did not get the impression that the OP WANTS to do things solo and might in fact enjoy excursions with others...thus the suggestion of coordinating with hotel. If I have that wrong then my suggestion might not be the best. I do tend to rely on personal research in advance of traveling but have found some of the best drivers and guides are recommended not on TA but by the hotel. They have a vested interest in their guests having the best possible experience and if they don't you can be sure they will let the hotel know.

Yes, getting shared shuttles this year has been difficult. Gray Lines has a 2-person minimum, which I have offered to pay if no other riders but so far I have not needed to pay extra. I have been able to travel with them on each of the days wanted although once had to go in afternoon instead of morning. Be prepared that the public bus may be more crowded than usual so don't want till the last minute to get your ticket, no standing allowed currently.
