Supermarket recommendations

Hi

We are staying at the eurocamp lanterna and will be part self catering our stay - which supermarket is good for basic supplies (picnic type stuff, snacks, barbecue food, beer) for a family. Are they fairly reasonable?

Thank yoj

Well, Lanterna is actually not in Poreč and is in fact closer to Novigrad. The closest I can think of a supermarket would be Tommy chain up on the main road, going from Vabriga village to Tar. You can see the area in this real-time movie of mine: https://www.youtube.com/watch… on the left. Rewind to see more of the area. Tommy isn't a huge chain and usually owns much smaller stores, but they are present in several cities and towns. I didn't happen to buy much there (not close to where I were) but they did have some good prices.

Btw, later on in the same movie (from 51:45), you can also see the entire coast, including going through parts of the camp, in case you're interested to have a better look. I will skip the vast nudist camp in the area ;) and take you right to the camp Lanterna, at 1:11:30: https://www.youtube.com/watch… Sorry but it won't do you much good if you're staying in the hotel as I went just around it (where I turn right, at the beach, that area would be left).

Anyway, Novigrad is fairly close (~10 km) and there you have supermarkets from two major chains - Konzum and Plodine. You can see exactly how to get there in the next movie from the series (#156): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=993uo5YNpMQ Will let you start at the beginning but I reach the Plodine supermarket at 12:40 (Konzum is right behind it). There are also one or two small Konzum grocery stores in the city (I should actually erach one of them in the same movie). There are no Kaufland, Lidl or Billa stores in the area that I know of. But both do exist in Poreč, a bit outside of the central area: https://www.google.com/maps/@45.2310933,13.6183339,17.41z Depending on where exactly you are in the Lanterna area, that would be ~12 km away. But the way to Novigrad might be cut shorter if you find someone to take you by boat. :) I would, however, recommend visiting both.

Btw, there are many restaurants in and around Lanterna (the area) but I haven't personally tried any so can't recommend. Also, after mentioning so much, I might also add that there's a waterpark very near Novigrad (Istralandia) and another is a bit south of Poreč, on the main road. In case you have kids or you just feel like some water fun, perhaps when the waves are too strong in the sea.

Sorry, you also asked about the supermarkets being reasonable and I'm guessing you meant in terms of prices? Well, you can check the websites which will show current discounts: http://www.plodine.hr/ and https://www.konzum.hr/, although the ones in tourist centres may be a bit more expensive. Oh and Tommy: http://tommy.hr/

Btw, "akcija" is the term used for "discount"/"sale" and "posebna ponuda" means "special offer". Of course, it may not be special at all, I'm just translating. :)

When we first visited a few years back we also stayed at Lanterna with Eurocamp. Onsite shop and restaurants a good 30% dearer than outside. Tommy supermarket is ok but also expensive (nearest). Our favourite (been to area 5 times now) is Plodine in Novigrad. It's a lovely drive there too. There's bigger supermarkets in Porec but a good 5-7 miles away whereas Novigrad is less than 3.

If you want a good Konoba (Inn) nearest to the Lanterna site try Kiwi (just before Tommy supermarket). As long as you don't mind cats the food is inexpensive and great (no, you don't eat the cats but there's a few milling around very friendly)
