Alexandria vs National Harbor

So, we are coming to the area in August for the Crab Fest in National Harbor. We are staying for a total of 4 nights. As I am planning the trip, it looks like the only things that we are truly interested in at National Harbor is the Crab Fest and a visit to the MGM. The rest of the time, I am interested in exploring Alexandria and DC. Would we better off just staying in Alexandria and then just going to National Harbor on the day of the Festival? Seems like there is more to do in Alexandria and it would have easier access to DC. By the way, we are in our 50's, have no problem taking the subway, and enjoy boutiques, great restaurants and on occasion, 1 too many cocktails! Advice greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Stay in Alexandria for sure. Base near/ on King St near the Metro for the easiest access to DC plus shopping and restaurants in Alexandria.

I completely agree with the other contributor. As a matter of fact, unless you're looking to gamble at the casino, I'd skip MGM entirely. It's a zoo!
