Will be staying in Alexandria for a few days in July and would like to get in a run or two. Suggestions for safe locations a visitor may want to get in a run while in town?
Dependent upon where you are located and your stamina, there are no finer (and safer) places to run than along the miles of pathways, some of which go all the way to W.VA! Not suspecting you have that kind of stamina, I suggest beginning at the waterfront and heading north. You can run to the Marina, just south of the Airport, or all the way to DC. The path through old town runs along the river to the south to Jones point lighthouse. Heading further south, you can follow the Mt. Vernon Trail and run all the way to Mt. Vernon Estate (approx 10 miles), perhaps the favorite all time route of mine. There is a connector path that can take you across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to Maryland along I-495, just south of Old Town. Lots of interesting things to see either way!
Thanks so much! I’m looking forward to seeing some new sights on my morning treks!
Susan: I just came across this post that might also be worthy. Not a jogging trail, per se, but if you have never seen our Great Falls on the Maryland/Virginia line, it is worlds away from the hectic DC atmosphere and takes you to the other side of our great country's landscapes! Worth considering if you have the time, and this is just at the I495 Beltway.
Thanks so much! This looks awesome!
