Fall Colors in Outskirts of Kyoto or Short Train Ride Away

We will be in Kyoto this mid November for 3 1/2 days . We are hoping that this will be a good year for fall foilage. Are the colors always good or are they unpredictable as they are in the USA? We are considering a day trip to a place like Koya-San or Mt. Hiei to casually stroll and enjoy the beauty of the colors around the mountain sights. What are other places should we be considering? thank you.

I suggest heading to Hikone. It's a nice castle with nice gardens, and the view of the mountains is very nice.

The fall colors are easier than hitting the cherry blossoms. Some years are less vibrant but for the most part, they are pretty from year to year. You could also try to go to Takao which is near Arashiyama and very famous for fall colors. There are trails and temples inside of the forest on the mountain. It's really beautiful when the colors have changed.

And I am pretty sure from another thread that you are not too keen to travel too far from Kyoto (No?) so Takao would be nice distance-wise. Or Kurama. There is a trail in the mountains that leads from Kurama Temple to Kibune and the views can be stunning. Last year, they were amazing. There are nice restaurants along a river/stream in Kibune and they have a great view for lunch time dining.
