River boat for visiting St Petersburg

I am taking a cruise from St Petersburg to Moscow on the MS Yesenin, starting with 3 nights in St Petersburg. I have heard that the traffic in St Persburg is slow and that we may want to abandon the planned tours, especially if they take you back to the boat for lunch.

Does anyone who has done the trip recently know whether there is a lot of heading back, (and wasted time) for meals? (We are with Jules Verne, if that makes a difference.)

If we abandon the included tours and do our own thing, is the metro the best form of transport back to the boat?

I can't comment on your included tours (coming back to the boat for lunch seems very unreasonable), but, with some planning, you should have no problem doing SPb on your own.

I take it Yesenin will be moored at Utkina Zavod? If that's the case, I'd try to maximize my time sightseeing, dine out, and then, late at night, take an Uber back to the ship.

If I remember the river boat dock is far from the sights and not close to any metro. I would avoid going back and forth.

Thanks for the replies-- confirming my suspicions. We will aim to maximise our time off ship. Disappointing that the metro is not that convenient in St P.

I am not a great fan of Uber. Is there a reason for recommending it particularly for Russia?

We were with a different cruise line but on the tour days they didn't go back to the boat but arranged lunches in town; they did this in Moscow too. I would look for reviews on line of your tour boat; I found a few of ours and they were very helpful in knowing what to expect.

We had ridiculous lunch places but they didnt' go back to the boat for lunch, it would have eaten up way too much time. (one restaurant in Moscow we nicknamed the 'clown porn place.' the restaurant had clowns in the center and had soft core porn playing on TVs angled around the room. About a third of our group got sick and no one else on the boat (i.e. no other tour group on our boat) got sick and our group blamed it on that restaurant as it was the only place large numbers who got sick ate that was off the boat.

I would not take any optional tours; our included tours were lousy but we added several days at both ends so it was not more than an annoyance. You will do better planning your own touring if you have a real interest in e.g. the Hermitage, actually going into the Church on Spilled Blood or St. Isaacs or whatever.

If they are going to the boat for lunch, I would make arrangements with a private guide. We used Tours by Locals for a couple of tours and were happy with them.

If you are moored at Utkina Zavod (as Perilsofpalaver suggests) , then I see you could take a taxi to Proletarskaya (Пролетарская) Metro. Doesn't look that far online. Map here:

I don't know about Uber - we just take a Yandex taxi anywhere we want to go. Never had a problem, day or night. Never pay more than $10 for a trip in Saint Petersburg. Many trips are $3 - $4. A great value when wanting to get somewhere fast. I've never seen slow traffic in Saint Petersburg, at least by Canadian city standards. For me, Saint Petersburg is a great city to get around by taxi, metro, or walking. Reserved, respectful, and reasonable people. And endless sites to visit.

Good luck.

Uber is cheap and take cash. Go for it.
