Drive from Boquete to Almirante

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has driven by car from Boquete to Almirante? How is the drive? Is it safe? If so, is there a place to safely park your car for a few days before getting onto water taxi?

We are driving a rental car. Any tips from your personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. We currently have a private transfer planned but would prefer to drive ourselves if do-able. Our trip is early March/17.

Thank you in advance.

I have never been on the road between Boquete and the road to Bocas but I have been on the road to Bocas plenty of times, and yes it is safe. I think from boquete it is around 3 hours but you need to get into Almirante BEFORE 6 PM. That is very important because, as you will see, Almirante is no place to spend the night. There is a secure lot right across from Bocas Marine Tours which is one of the main water taxi company. The parking lot is around 3 a night, maybe more by now. The drive over the continental divide is incredibly beautiful so give yourself time to stop and smell the cloud forests. The only real safty issue driving in the early day (or anytime really) is cars passing other cars around blind corners but there is rarely any problems. Also there may be fog at the higher points but during the day it should be fine.

Yes, I've done the drive. Once you cross over the crest of the mountains, if the weather is clear, the views are absolutely fantastic! The drive itself is pretty safe. As anywhere in Panama, you really need to pay attention on mountain curves because Panamanian drivers tend to take the inside lane on turns, no matter which side of the road it's on. Other than that, you shouldn't have any problems as long as you have a full tank of gas when you start. There are very few places to stop for food, gas or incidentals between Boquete and Almirante.

In Almirante there are lots near the water taxis where you can park your car. They are all reasonably safe. As anywhere in Panama, you shouldn't leave anything of value visible.

While doing the drive is very nice (as far as vistas) you might want to weigh the cost of the rental car -- the day going there, the days it will be parked + parking fees, the day returning and the gas -- versus the cost of taking a shuttle.

We are driving from Playa Blanca, Rio Hato in our rental car to Boquete, staying the night. We have the option to leave our car at a friend's place just outside of Boquete and take the shuttle and water taxi to Bocas. We would prefer to do the drive if safe and would like to know if there is still a car lot to park our car for three nights safely. We would like to know if you or someone you know has just very recently parked in the car lot. We would hate to arrive in Almirante and not have a place for our rental last minute. We have some experience driving in Panama. El Valle, downtown Panama City a few times. Wondering about the drive through the mountains?? Can you safely pull, aside to take photos of the scenery?

There are quite a few area to pull off the road and actual "miradors" viewing areas.

The drive is beautiful. Road can (does have) potholes in places. Allow 4 hours to Almirante. There is a safe place to park just before the water taxis to Bocas. +\- $3.00 a day. Be careful with the help you will get finding a water taxi. Go to Taxi25 which is furthest from car park but most reliable. Stop at lake on way over for break. Small truck stop diner at bottom of road when you turn left (Chirique grand). Have full tank of gas to last both ways.
