Nikko world heritage area and National Park

I am visiting Japan in March and April 2018. My husband and I plan to travel to Nikko from Tokyo in mid April.

My questions are: Is it best to hire a car or take public transport.

What is best, a two day or one day trip?

Are the shrines open now? I have heard that they are being restored?

Best is to take public transport. Use Hyperdia to navigate your way to Nikko. Best to use Tobu instead of JR if you are not holding the JR pass. If you plan on driving to Nikko, it would be either very pricey or very inconvenient. The tolls are expensive, and by avoiding them you will spend an extra 1 hour wandering around smaller roads.

I think 1 day would be enough. There's not too much in Nikko, mainly heritage sites and the Chuzenji Lake. My friend went to Nikko last month and says that there are some which are under construction. Not all of them are closed.

Public transport to Nikko works best. Yes, many sites still being restored but it won't affect your experiences there; well worth it. One day is enough unless you have a spare and then 1.5 days would be ideal.
