how to get from izmir to bodrum/bitez

Hi All

Can anyone advise how to get from Izmir Aiport to Bitez please?

There will be two adults, travelling in May.

I've checked online, izmirtaxis.com and they're looking for €270 return.

-Seems extremely expensive to me.

I wonder is there cheap internal flights available, if so can someone recomend name of airline please?

Maybe there is a bus service, i'm hoping air conditioned as my parents are 65+.

I've tried this link but it's all in turkish:

I've also tried this link, also in Turkish:

I'm guessing it's cheap enough to get a taxi from bodrum to bitez?!

I can't figure out if I can book in advance or not.

Many Thanks for any help,

There is no flight from Izmir to Bodrum unfortunately but there are buses.(Again)unfortunately they will have to go from the airport into Izmir centre to get the bus though :(

They can either take a taxi from the airport to the Otogar(bus station)or take the Havaş airport bus.Which will be best will depend on a)what time they land,b) how much luggage they will have to cart around and c)how confident they feel about negotiating this DIY.If they don't object to the expense then a taxi will be best and won't cost too much, maybe around15€.

Once at the bus station there are regular buses(every hour) to Bodrum with Metro and also Pamukkale Turizm as you learnt☺and the cost is 25TL(roughly 13€).The journey takes 4 hours and once in Bodrum they can either take the local bus or a taxi for the short trip out to Bitez..

Because the buses to Bodrum are frequent they have no need to pre book tickets, just turn up and they will be able to pay in Euro if they haven't local currency.

The bus schedules don't change at all during the year except maybe even more frequent so please let me know their arrival time and I can see which bus will be best for them.

Hi Lj,

It is very easy to go to Bodrum from Izmir airport. First of all you need to go to Otogar (Main Bus Terminal of Izmir) from the Izmir airport: "turkeytravelplanner.com/go/Aegean/Izmir/tran…". The best way to go is by HAVAS bus or by train (which has a station at the airport terminal). HAVAS bus is more frequent but more costly. These buses go to Izmir Otogar directly from the airport, "havas.net/fileadmin/…Izmir_Animasyon.swf" and I recommend them. They cost 10 TL/person. If you take the train however, it goes to Basmane station and you would have to take a taxi to Otogar from that train station.

Once at Otogar, there are many bus companies that serve Bodrum. Metro turizm is one of the better ones: "http://www.metroturizm.com.tr/" (click on English at upper left of home page and select departure/destination and date from rolldown menu). The bus costs 25 TL/person and you can buy your tickets in advance from the internet if you wish.

Once in Bodrum, from the Bodrum Otogar, there are reguler dolmush(shared taxi) services to Bitez. So get on one of those dolmushes and you will end up at the cute little town of Bitez, by the sea. These Dolmushes cost very little per person and you surely do not need a taxi to go to Bitez. Bitez is about 7-8 km to Bodrum Otogar and dolmush will take 10-15 minutes to get there.

One final alternative is to rent a nice economy car at Izmir airport and drive it to Bodrum and drop it off at Bitez after your arrival to hotel. Gas is expensive, but this alternative is the fastest, most comfortable and lots of fun.

good luck,

Hi ellejay08

I think sari has given you excellent information to help you arrange transfers for your parents.

Once they get to Izmir Otogar they will easily find a coach/bus to Bodrum. The coaches are air conditioned and comfortable, tho in May they shouldn't find it hot in the extreme. I also think they'll be fine with the havas service from the airport to the otogar but again sari has raised good points re this part of the journey.

Personally I'd advise using a taxi for getting from Bodrum otogar to Bitez, okay it's not far and the dolmus service is great, but they'll be pretty tired by now i would imagine and struggling with a new form of transport, finding the right dolmus in the very busy otogar, then working out when to get off and calling to the driver at the right time may be more than they want to tackle at this point in their holiday.

Hiring a car would be quite stressful I feel and expensive in the extreme, probably far more expensive than the taxi option you've already discounted, unless your parents are confident drivers and would get use out of the car once they arrive in Bitez. Petrol is very expensive and the alternative drop off fee's are very high.

This was my feelings too Sue.Whilst 65+ is not old by any means(cripes I'm creeping that way myself!)I took their long journey into account, tiredness, luggage, etc etc and felt that taking a taxi to the Otogar was probably the better option. The cost isn't going to be so great(and far less than one all the way to Bodrum)and this is more than off set by the cheap price of the bus tickets too.Same with a taxi to Bitez, especially if it is night time .

Sometimes you have weight up the benefit of economy vs.comfort and convenience.

OP,one other point;as Sue says the buses are A/C and they are also non smoking and there are onboard hostesses handing out hot and cold beverages and snacks free of charge too.

This past summer we had quite a few posts from people who were travelling down from Izmir due to finding better priced flights and they all seemed to manage this transfer easily enough so I am sure your parents will be fine.People here are always willing to point you in the right direction and help with luggage etc.

When it is time to return home then quite possibly the hotel will be happy to run them into Bodrum Otogar.

Thank you all for that valuable information.

It's extremely helpful.

However, I didn't realise the journey would take that long.

My parents have been to Side, and really enjoyed it.

I wonder if there is a location similiar to Side, near to Izmir?

They loved the promenade walk, the beach, the town, the markets, yet it wasn't too busy for them.

Is there a location similiar but closer?

I gather Kusadassi is about forty mins away, but I wonder if it's too busy?

They're too old for non stop nightlife!

Take a look at Çeşme.This is roughly an hour transfer flying into the same airport,Izmir. It is a beautiful peninsula with lovely scenery and is unspolt and not over commercialised.Similar to the Bodrum peninsula, travelling around on the great local buses is cheap and easy and there are some nice little villages and beaches for them to visit.Have a look on the Çeşme forum to get a better idea of what it is like.Local DE,Dande has lived there many years now and can give you excellent accurate information if you need more.I'm sure they would love it there☺
