Places between Izmir and Bodrum/Marmaris

Hello everyone,

Now I'm thinking of driving south from Izmir to Bodrum or Marmaris. But is there anything fun and meaningful to do and see between these two areas? Our group is big on culture, foods (not just touristy but authentic local foods), historical and natural beauties. Where do you recommend we drive to and check out...for a couple of hours or maybe even a whole day.

Thank you all.

Is this instead of or in addition to driving north from Izmir?Or can't you decide where to go?

So you plan to drive from Izmir to Bodrum or Marmaris in a few hours.....or a day?

Izmir to Bodrum is 235 km

Izmir to Marmaris is 264 km

while we have excellent motorways you are not going to get to see much of anything on these "trips" in a few hours.

Can you please be a bit more specific and I will be happy to assist you with an itinerary for your group.

To be honest north of Izmir is the better option for nature, culture and history. The southwest sector has been pretty much ruined by mass tourism unfortunately.

South of Izmir is Selçuk and then the 3 interesting but lesser sites of Priene,Miletus and Didyma.Going inland slightly you could include Aphrodisias,Leodecia and Pamukkale/Hierapolis,maybe Magnesia, the old towns of Ödemiş and Birgi in Aydın both of which are quaint,Iasos, near Bodrum,Labranda nearer to Milas and then of course one or two historical spots actually in Bodrum itself such as the castle and Pedesa at Konacık.

Around Marmaris the only point of real interest is Knidos down on Datça peninsula.

If you go beypond Marmaris to Fethiye then you have access to some rather nice unspoilt villages and also the start of the Lycian Way hiking route which is littered with ancient sites and some lovely natural views

If you are open to either direction from Izmir then the north will offer you far more.

you know these area so well. Is Antalya area also interesting as Fethiya area? what are the names of those unsoiled villages?

if Bodrum is similar to Fethiya and antalya, or not as interesting, then should we skip it? we only have 7 nights. this is our current plan:

fly to Antalya in the morning, rent a car, and then drive, return the car at the train station at Izmir.

1. Antalya 2 nights and 1.5 days

day trip to Side

2. Fethiya 2 nights

day trip to ???

3. Pamukkale 1 night

4. Bodrum 1 night (1.5 days)

drive to Selcuk at the late afternoon

5. Selcuk 1 night

visit Ephensus the next day, and then take night train from Izmir to Istanbuland then catch our flight at 14:50.
