birdwatching groups in Puerto Ayora (or elsewhere in Galapag

Hello, does anyone know whether there is a local amateur birdwatching group one could join when in Sta Cruz? I'll be there for over a month, and speak fluent Spanish, so would really love to join some local people if and when they have their outings (I've done this elsewhere when travelling, e.g. South Africa and Canada, obviously Galapagos is different and perhaps there are no such groups).

please let me know!

many thanks in advance

Dear Chris,

if you'll be there for over a month, the best bet is to start networking on site. I suspect you may not find too many organized groups - but you may find other like-minded travelers you could link up to. Brush up on your shorebirds, endemics etc... and you'll be well prepared. You can always send a note to the Charles Darwin Research Station and ask if they can recommend anything. If you want to splurge, you can try to find a naturalist guide who's a birding specialist and hire them for any amount of time you might want.

Warmest regards - and happy birding!

Yes we are Birdos too ... arriving mid May and desperately trying to get to Seymour Norte and Las Bachas as a day trip. Any advice please. Thank you

It’s very easy to find a day trip to North Seymour once you are in Puerto Ayora.

To watch birds you should consider going to Punta Pitt (blue, red and Nazca boobies) or Española (boobies and albatrosses) among other seabirds.

Very easy to do Seymour Norte and Las Bacchas! We went yesterday and saw heaps of birds including flamingos which was amazing and unexpected. The snorkeling is great there too. Bring a few bottles of sunscreen though from the mainland and rashies.

Many thanks to all for your recommendations!

In the end, I found that I had the best time when I organised my 'trips' myself, with the help of information from local naturalists (who often work for agencies). For example, on Isabela, I took the 7am bus to S, Tomas and walked another 20 minutes uphill on the road leading to the volcano - and there by the roadside spent an hour observing the vermilion flycatcher. Beyond the Muro de las Lagrimas, many opportunities to observe cactus finches.

On Floreana, where I stayed 5 days, I walked up to the radio mast above the tortoise enclosure and along the old post office path - lots of inquisitive flycatchers warblers mockingbirds and finches, some fluttering right in front of my face.
