Chinatown Bus to AC

I am contemplating taking the bus in a few days for an overnight trip from Chinatown NY. Are the buses reliable, safe and clean?

Please no fascist remarks, I have clear understanding most travelers may be gamblers. Just looking for an honest opinion. Next alternative will be to rent a car but I would rather keep is simple since I live 20 mins. from Chinatown.

I haven't taken them but see them often in transit going and coming from AC. So it seem clear a sizable number of people are taking them everyday with no problem. I also understand many of the passengers are not much gamblers. The buses I see lately seem in better condition than some I saw a few years ago. I believe there were some issues a few years ago and the City [& State?] government has tightened up important enforcement of safety requirements. I know some college students take them during the summer for the free beaches, and I never heard of any having problems.

Please post back here how it went if you do take one.

Just make sure you don’t use one of these bus companies mentioned in this article. But I’m a little confused about your comment about most travelers are gamblers. Are you implying that gamblers are willing to accept a higher risk by riding a Chinatown bus?

A lot of the people taking the bus are not necessarily gamblers - many just take the bus and whatever the casino offers them. Since this is a day junket, you'll have to arrange with the bus company to allow you on another bus coming home. If the bus is filled, you may not be able to get on.

UPDATE: I called the Golden Bus in Chinatown and got the schedule. They are not very forthcoming with information but I was able to piece the info together. I went overnight and paid $27 RT and received $25 slot credit and $25 table credit (not bad). So the trip was essentially free. NOTE: If you stay overnight then you are on standby so make sure to keep an open mind that you may not make it on the desired departure time. There are plenty of departures so the standby may not be for long. THE RIDE: It is a few grades below the mega bus. No leather plush seats and years of wear and tear are visible. In addition, not all buses are the same (some are nicer). To summarize the crowd, it is like riding the NYC subway to Flushing (in the form of a worn out bus) to AC. Do not expect luxury traveling. But the trip is only 2.5 hours - so it was not that bad. They have a very flexible schedule so a day trip is doable.
