Hotel recommendation in "Dubai"

Searching for a hotel in the "most interesting" touristy location in "Dubai". (April 30 to May 6, 2008) gotta do this soon....

Prices seem to vary greatly...

We would like to see the "local" areas, camel races, interesting shopping boutiques..not the normal massive stores... what are your thoughts about The Metropolitan Palace or the Taj Palace Hotel?? Is renting a car suggested? Or should we hire a driver to "show us the sites" or or or.. Is Dubai a huge area and if so, what is the "area" we should concentrate on? Is there a "pedestrian" shopping/hotel street?

This will be an adventure for two 50-year old Californians who love to travel, munch at cafes and pop into pubs here and there...and find just the right markets for that special souvenir Any suggestions gratefully appreciated....

Dubai is basically split into an "Old" Dubai and "New" Dubai.

The Old consists of the more "ethnic" and older areas around the creek such as Dierra and Bur Dubai. It is here that you can visit the museums, the old style markets (souks), gold souk etc. There are plenty of hotels in Dierra and Bur Dubai - you can visit this thread for more on recommendations of hotels:

The New Dubai is mainly waterfront and sea / beaches surrounded by large malls.

The distances within Old Dubai are relatively small and since its quite congested you should use cabs or walk if weather permits. Part of Dierra are good for pedestrian style shopping.

New Dubai is very spread out and far and you would need a vehicle for sure.

Hi there just make sure that you are on the creek to avoid all the chaos due to the new metro line. Would recommend hilton dubai creek, sheraton dubai creek, both have shuttles to their sister beach hotels. If your budget allows you then the grand hyatt, park hyatt or even raffles would be very nice treat! All these hotels are in old dubai from which you can commute to new dubai.

Also make sure you try the desert safari. Best way to travel is by taxi, very cheap so is affordable means of transport.
