Dubrovnik to Split - day trip?

Hi Guys

I am thinking of staying in Dubrovnik for 3 days during which I would like to do at least one day 'out' I would like to visit Split or even Zagreb as I 've heard its quite 'cosmo'. How feasible is it? Are there tour companies that I can book something with or should I really hire a car?

Thanks

Split and Zagreb are really too far from Dubrovnik for a day trip. The drive to Split takes about 4 to 4.5 hours in each direction, which wouldn't leave you much time in Split. The drive to Zagreb from Dubrovnik takes about 6 to 7 hours. It is possible to fly up to Zagreb early in the morning and then return to Dubrovnik that night on Croatia Airlines if you really want to see it. But, for a good day trip from Dubrovnik, I would recommend Mostar (in Bosnia), the Island of Korcula, or Kotor & Budva (in Montenegro). All of these can be seen in one day and there are a few local companies that offer tours to these places. The biggest companies are Atlas and Elite. If you perfer a smaller, private tour, there are also a lot of small companies that offer these for about 200 - 220 Euros.

I agree with CaliCourtney. We were in Dubovnik in June for the first time. While it is a romantic and beautiful town, there is not that much there to see once you have hit the highlights. It is also VERY tiny ( of course it has a more modern part that extends onto the hillside) but the castle-walled town can be explored in one short day.We took the bus to Split though and it seemed longer than it was - at one point the bus becomes a 'local" and people stuffed the bus as it stopped every mile or so. It seemed like it took all day, though it probably was from about 10 to 3:00. Having said that, we thought Split was great and maybe you could take a mid-morning bus there, stay the night, catch a bus back the next day to Dubrovnik, though that would be a lot of travelling for sure. Instead you could do as CaliCourtney suggests, remain in Dubrovnik as a base and go into Montenegro which everyone said was terrific. I regret that we did not do this, in retrospect...but it gets expensive if you hire a car, either with or without a driver. This page seems to have some pretty good info, though like all info about this part of the world, there seems to be a great divergence of opinion.

You might be able to do Split in a day trip from Dubrovnik, but it might be a long day. Zagreb is definitely out of the question though. No way you can drive there in a day and the only way would be to take a flight there and back. I agree with the thought of going to Mostar for a day trip or maybe even look into Korcula or a drive up the Peljesac Peninsula.
