New Year in Bucharest

Is the Palace of Parlament open on 1st January?

And are the major shopping malls open too on new year's day?

Any recommendations for new year celebrations?

thanks a lot

The Palace of Parliament and most other museums will be closed on January 1st.

Malls are usually open but only in the afternoon (after 13:00 - 14:00).

As for celebrations, on NYE there will be a large open air party with live music, fireworks etc. in one of the main squares, plus possibly smaller similar parties in the neighborhoods.

All restaurants will host sold-out festive dinners, so if you want to go a restaurant that night book at least a few weeks ahead. Clubs, bars, pubs will have parties and will be packed but usually booking ahead isn't needed for them (unless you want a table).

Not really, almost everything is closed that morning. If you don't mind the cold you could take a walk through the northern part of the city (Herastrau park and the neighborhoods around it) or generally through the downtown.

Thanks. Does Public transport work on New year's day? And you mentioned the weather, is it cold in december/january?

Yes, public transport works on January 1st but seriously, January 1st is probably the one day of the year when the entire city looks deserted, like a ghost town. In fact that might be interesting to see in itself.

It's usually pretty cold around New Year's Eve, maybe about -5 degrees Celsius (although it was around -15 for two of the last four New Year's Eves)

If you really want to be active, one suggestion would be to take a daytrip to one of the Prahova Valley mountain resorts (Sinaia, Busteni or Predeal). They are likely to be more vibrant on January 1st as they are packed with tourists. You can ski, there will definitely be snowy mountain scenery and more open restaurants.

The train journey from Bucharest takes about 1h40' and trains are very frequent.
