1 week in Romania

Im looking for advice. Booked flights into Bucharest for the first week in July. 2 of us. Would like to see and do as much as possible in that time. Any recommendations on the best route to travel? is it best to use public transport or drive? What are the must see places. Thank you

You can do Bucharest - Sibiu ( with a side trip to Corvin castle) - Sighisoara - Brasov ( side trip to Bran&Rasnov) - Sinaia (Peles castle) - Bucharest.

It can be easily done by public transport, but a car would give you more options.

alterne has given you some great suggestions!

It depends what you want to do - definitely go to Brasov - and from there you can do day trips to check out the castles and fortresses.

You can definitely get around solely using public transport - the infrastructure is good and is cheap as well.

Bucharest is lovely city and there is lots to see and do!

Well greenetravel28 we were in Romania last month stayed 1 night in Bucharest ( should have stayed for 2) hired a car on our 2nd day from the airport and drove up to Brasov for 3 nights. Lots to see in Brasov, from Brasov we visited Bran castle (Dracula), Rasnov fortress, Sighisoura and Crit, all really worth seeing. We also visited Libearty sanctuary, near Brasov, where we saw about 30 Brown bears that were rescued from terrible conditions in captivity. Did another trip to see wild Brown bears from a hide in the forest only 15 minutes outside Brasov, we saw 6, great value for only €45 with Absolute Carpathian. In Bucharest and Brasov there's a free Walkabout tour well worth doing, everthing in Romania is cheap, imported beer is cheaper than Ireland and Romanian beer is very cheap and not bad. As for driving roads are fairly good, locals like to overtake anywhere, i found when they come up behind you just let them off and you'll be ok, only little hassle was most parking meters only take coins but coins are hard to get.

Hi there,

In Bucharest, you are better off using the subway.

If you want to visit around the country you could hire a car or take day tours. I have only taken day tours from Targu Mures, and that was with www.travelbugtours.ro

More a general warning for hiring cars from smaller, off airport car hire companies in Romania. Be very aware that a cheap price seems to go in hand with the high risk of paying out for existing damage if you haven't been diligent in photographing (date and time marked) and marking on the hire documents every mark no matter how small, and no matter what the hire car staff say. This type of scam plays on you being rushed to make your flight and giving in to demands. Wash your car and clean interior before returning car an hour earlier than agreed (to avoid penalties for dirty car and late fees), be prepared for aggressive tactics to coerce you into paying for made up damage, photograph all existing damage again on return. If you find yourself in this position notify the car hire company by email of your intention to place a complaint with the Romanian police, the Organization of Consumer Protection, your car hire booking agent and your credit card holder. A threat to write a bad review does not discourage these type of operators. Please beware and research the company you intend to hire from. You will be glad you did.
