i have booked three days in Beirut in March. I now read on the Canadian government travel advisory that one should not travel to Beirut unless one essential business. Is it advisable to cancel?

That is excellent and I look forward to my three days in March. I have a booking at the Le Gray and wonder if there is an interesting souk nearby as well as restaurants. Are there some good restaurants where the pollution in not too bad ad that have outside dining? Appreciate the advice!

Why worry?

I have never been anywhere in the area before but a week in February to Syria was first moved along by about a month to include Jordan and has eventually evolved into 3 weeks with a flight out to Beirut and a few days in the Lebanon thrown into the mix.

I have already become aware of the Canadian advisory through a thread put up about a trip to Syria and wherever else by a smashing Canadian lady. As it turns out she is putting off the trip but only because it is going to be easier for her to do something she was already thinking about.

I could, of course, have mixed this up with a different thread from a different country but wherever I said that if you took any notice of dire warnings by Governments you would never get out of bed, but then again where do the vast majority of people die?

Have a really great time and if you happen to be gone and back by 24 March pretty please put up a quick trip report to help me along the way!!!

Regards

John

Hi John,

Yes, I agree, why worry and I will be on the road (I should say fly) to Beirut in a few months. Regarding the thread; both US as well as Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAIT))have an extreme warning (not travel except on essential business.) Take a look.

some years back I traveled to Sri Lanka to interview Arthur C Clarke for a book under one of these dire warnings and had a great and safe time even with the novelty of the sand bagged machine gunned stop checks on every block (Colombo) with no occurrences of note. After three weeks there I flew out with my heart in my mouth because of a Tamil Tiger bomb threat to airlines in the Colombo newspapers. I will never forget that midnight flight wondering if the plane would suddenly (and me)explode into tiny pieces. Anyway, the people in these risky places are so often the best memories. And (as you rightly point out) one can't worry as most of the world seems to be under siege.

Best,

Victoria Brooks.

the reason western governments issu warning to their citizens just in case something goes wrong in that country/location then the citizen can blame his country for NOT warning him/her about the situation.

They/western gov. can say to etheir citizen"we told you so"

I was caught once in a country where suddenly trouble broke out and i was trapped. That was the answer i got from my embassy when i asked them to rescue/assist me.

Hello,

The newly renovated Beirut souks and restaurants are five minutes walk from Le Gray hotel located at Martyrs square. Also five minutes walk from Le Gray on the pedestrian Maarad street and Nejmeh square where the Lebanese parliament is located you will find good restaurants that have outside dining.

You wil definitly love Le Gray hotel and especially where it is located. Le Gray is located in Downtown Beirut next to the new Beirt Souks Mall and all the other shopping areas. You are in the middle between west and east beirut. There are great tours you can do to Biet el dine, byblos, baalbek. Your hotel can help you with this but they might over charge you. You can call Nakhal Direct and they can set up everything for you. There number is 01-389389. Hamra and Gemayze have great bars and restaurants and a nice atmosphere. Gemayze is a walking distance from your hotel. Any more info i would be glad to give :) All the best.
