Beach in April, Indian Visa& Ferry :)

Hello !

After more than 1.5 years of working in Georgia, my boyfriend Jan and I are planning a big overland trip from Sri Lanka to Central Asia. We will start our journey in Sri Lanka in April and are hoping to find a nice and quiet beach where we can relax and enjoy decent but budget (app 25$ a night) and hopefuly beach front accommodation for a couple of days. What places could you recommend for this time a year ? We are not interested in fancy resort places as we are traveling on a budget. Having been to India and Thailand before, is Sri Lanka really more expensive than these countries (especially Thailand) ?

Google and travel forums led me to believe that the beaches around/of Mirissa and Arugam are quite nice, but maybe you know of some better options for April ?

Also, we are relying on the fact that we can get the Indian visa in Colombo or Kandy. I read that this shouldn't be a problem ?

And then a last question, what is the latest on the Sri Lanka - India ferry ? Can someone confirm that the colombo - tuticorin is still running, twice a week, for 60$ ?

Thank you so much :)

Greetings from Tbilisi

Getting a visa for India in Sri Lanka is a really slow process. Count on minimum one week.

The ferry between Colombo and Tuticorin has not been running since early November 2011, and at the moment no news whether it will ever run again.

Flights from Colombo to Chennai are quite cheap due to high competition on that route.

Mirissa and Arugam are about the best beaches in April yes. Add Trinco-Nilaveli to it (has less budget places though), and be aware that while weather in Mirissa is probably brilliant the sea might already start getting more rough and swimming outside the reef-protected areas can get risky.

All the best,

only 4 in-expensive convenient options you have to travel to India. Direct flights.

Colombo to Thiruvananthapuram - cheap (Sri Lankan direct)

Colombo to Chenani - cheap (Jet airways, Spice Jet (LCC), Sri Lankan, Air India, Kingfisher)

Colombo to Kochi (Sri Lankan Direct)

Colombo to Bangalore (Sri Lankan direct)

Cheapest options would be close to 100$. Better deals if you check with an agent in Sri Lanka once you arrive.

thanks for all the useful info. Too bad the ferry didn't survive very long. Will have no choice but to fly then :\
