Transportation?

Can someone please explain transportation in Brunei and BSB?

What is the cheapest/best way to get around?

it's not easy going around in Brunei if you're a tourist. if you plan to take the bus, there's a chance you may have to wait for an hour or so for it. perhaps you would like to rent a car and then install Waze to bring you to places.

Hi TA2883!

For BSB, you can get away with just walking as most places of interest are within walking distance of each other. If you stay in a hotel in the capital (can't remember which!), they may have a free shuttle service that would take you to a museum and even the shopping/lively areas like Gadong/Kiulap.

You could also hire a daytour driver and/or guide to take you to places of interest. I did a 3-hour tour of the water village and proboscis monkey encounter with a local travel agency for B$90 per person. Tours to other parts of the country are also available.

Buses are very cheap but not reliable.

Taxis are easier to find at the airport, hotels... Here are some info on the pricing: mincom.gov.bn/ltd/…20Taxi.aspx

Could rent a car (B$60 - $80 for 24 hours for a saloon car)

If all else fails, you may try using the couchsurfing app. Might meet some friendly, helpful locals who are willing to drive/show you around!

Use Dart or local bus.

For non Asians make sure you get a multi-entry visa the first time you enter Brunei if you are travelling between Kota Kinabalu and BSB by road. This will save you waiting in customs for up to 30 mins or more along the route because you have to leave and re-enter Brunei. Make sure you have the correct money in either Brunei $ or Singapore $. Currently $30. Alternatively a single entry $20 plus transit $5 but it will take min 30 mins and sometimes 2hrs at each border. Each non Asian visa takes 30 mins approx. You won't be very popular with fellow travellers or the bus driver.

Travelling by road between KK and BSB you will use at least 2 pages in your passport with all the stamps you will receive crossing borders and districts.

Hope this is useful for those wishing to take this road trip which is otherwise pretty cool.

Public bus is $1 per ride. Last bus is around 6.30pm. Quite an extensive network.
