Credit charges with Avis

This is really more a post than a question. I wanted to share our experience with renting a car through Avis at the Phuket airport. Great experience overall, very professional and fast. BUT, when you pay via credit card, don't allow them to charge you in dollars (or whatever your home currency is.) They get you on the exchange rate...we got 28.5 on the BHT to dollar rate, as oppposed to the market rate of 29.5. Had we been charged in baht, we would have saved $35. (Citibank gives 29.5). Live and learn...in general, when paying by credit card, DO NOT allow the merchant to do the conversion. Let your bank do it. Only sign for a charge in baht. When they run the card, they do have the choice, so don't accept any merchant that says, "I can't charge you in baht."

The same goes for all places you pay with credit card. Always pay in thai baht. Paying in your home currency is called dynamic currency conversion, and always yields bad exchange rates.

Btw, it is not the thai merchanet, it are the thai banks pushing this. The merchant gets credited in baht, the bank makes the big profit on the exchange rates.

Its actually your own credit card company that makes the currency exchange charges, so its them you blame.
