Once you are airside you can buy water inside the terminal but you must consume it before boarding as any liquids over 100ml will be confiscated at the boarding gate. (They do an individual bag search.) But you can take on an empty water bottle which can be refilled on the plane.

#2 ... supposedly a security issue, as the liquid could be something dangerous.

Tommy, because of international terrorism.

Simply post your question in Google, plenty of information to read about why liquids were banned

Are you talking airside to domestic or international. Domestic it won't be confiscated, International to Aust it will be confiscated, International to most other destinations it won't.

Depends who's working, and their mood if you'll be able to bring any water through security point into gate area.

Rule is 100ml, so that 500ml small bottle you just bought from the vendor at airport outside of security, isn't going to make.

The vendor's water on the other gateside of security will be fine.

All for your own safety. So drink up, or toss away if rule applied.

"The vendor's water on the other gateside of security will be fine" - unless the OP is boarding a flight back to Oz from Phuket, then it is confiscated at the bag check at the boarding gate.
