Stay Post Cruise in Mauritius, perhaps Port Louis

Looking to do a cruise which ends in Port Louis next November and would like to do a post cruise stay for about a week but Mauritius is obviously an expensive base.

Can anyone suggest any possible places to stay. A business hotel, or perhaps a self catering unit? A posh hotel with pool area is not needed - a rooftop pool would be nice, but not essential as we hope to get out and about a fair bit. Are meals expensive to buy there?

Also would it be very difficult or expensive to get about when staying there. Would hope to use taxis, or public transport if it works well. We are in our mid sixties, but are well travelled in less developed parts of the world so are prepared to be realistic, but would not want somewhere aimed at backpackers.

You would be best looking at Grand Baie or Pereyebere area which has lots of places to eat our including Fast Food in the 2 food court malls.

Or the Becosy aparthotel in Trou aux Biches in the north west - right in the small village with shops and restaurants and on the bus route to Grand Baie and Port Louis. Beach is across the road.

Take a look at apartments to rent on TAs Grand Baie, Pereybere and Trou aux Biches and Choisy pages.

I visited these two a few years ago when looking around for a friend and the second listed has a good location opposite Pereybere beach and with shops and restaurants whilst the first is close to a small supermarket and two beaches.

Food can be as cheap or expensive as you wish - Mauritius has high end restaurants and the usual fast food outlets like KFC etc.

That really is a great help, there is very little detail on the cruise forums, which I use a lot (to help as well as be helped).

We would want to get out and about during our stay there. Is there any good public transport on the Island? If we would we need to use taxis, what could we expect to pay for a half day tour, or could we just get a taxi to a location and pick up another with ease to return?

It is often better paying a bit more for accommodation if there are reasonable transport links from the location.

Yes there is a regular and cheap bus service - see here for description of bus services and timetable:

http://www.mauritius-buses.com/

You could hire a taxi for a full day sightseeing for about £60 -70. Not such a good idea to get one to a location then count on being able to pick one up to get home.

For places to see look at the Top Questions on the main Mauritius page ( to the right) which also has some useful information on other aspects of Mauritius too.

I am really thankful for those replies. Some of the accommodation looks really good and the online bus finder seems to work really well. Wish we had something as good as that here!

We have not booked the cruise as yet, but it is obviously a good idea as a stay in Mauritius afterwards looks quite feasible. I thought taxis may be super expensive, but not too bad at all if you can have a day trip for that sort of price, not that we would do a lot as we like to take things slowly and appreciate our environment, have walks around etc. but the reliability of our own taxi would be really good and well worth it for a couple of our days there.

Just need to sort my medical screening for the travel insurance on Monday as I have had a bad chest infection over the last couple of months and have just about got shut of it.

Thanks again,

Barbara

Taxis work out expensive for short trips. They are not metered but work out better for hiring a driver for the day to take you on tours.

I use buses frequently when I visit and usually take a bus to Grand Baie or Port Louis.

Barbara you are welcome and anything else we can help with please do let us know! I hope you are feeling completely better soon. I picked a bug up in Thailand mid December and still cant get rid of it!

Seems to be a bad winter for bugs this year.

Good luck for tomorrow :-)
