Getting to El Djem

Hi ..just wondering how easy it is to get to El Djem amphitheatre from Hammamet . Is it doable on our own or better on an organised excursion . ? Really want to see this while we are there . Any help would be appreciated .

Thanks

Pauline

Hi sugar 100

It is doable to get to El Jem..

Organised excursion via the tour operator or hotel concierge..

Taxi: which would take approximately 1hour 50 minutes, and can be ordered at your hotel reception or outside your hotel, one would need to agree a price..

Train: Hammamet to Bir Bou Regbg which takes 2/3 hours change onto El Jem which takes 1 hour and this operates 3 times a day.

You could take a bus/luarge to Enfidha then onto Sousse followerd by the train onto El Jem but your looking at 4/5 hours.

Double check with your hotel reception if you do decide to do any of the above route as it is Tunisia and timetables vary !!

Thanks Philippa .. seems a bit far away .. thinking an organised excursion is the way to go now ..never been to Tunisia before so not sure about getting trains ..would be fine if it was just one train but think I'd end up lost ..lol ..thanka anyway xx

Sugar

The El Jem organised excursion from Hammamet would involve a lot of sitting on the coach

Even longer for you, as you are staying in Hammamet North.

I lifted the following details from the local trip provider TTS website

The price may.. no will be more with T/Cook !

Kairouan & Eljem: 1 Day

Departure Hammamet:

Every Wednesday

From 115 TND

1 Day

Departure: Hammamet

Program

~ 08h00: Departure from Hammamet

~ 9:15: Arrive in Kairouan • Visit the Aghlabid basins (0:15)

• Visit the grand mosque (0:45)

• Visit the mausoleum Sidi Sahbi (0:45)

• Guided Cross the Medina Bab Tunis in Bâb Ejjalldine and free time or visit of a carpet shop (01h00)

• Visit of the multimedia center: projection of a film on the Arab Muslim civilization in an authentic setting in the heart of the Kairouan Medina.

00h30 ~ 13h00: Lunch (01h00)

~ 14h00: Departure to El Jem.

~ 15:00: Arrival in El Jem.

• Visit of the Roman Amphitheater: 01h00

• Visit of the museum: 30 min

~ 16h30: Return to Hammamet.

~ 18:00: Arrival at the first hotel in Hammamet.

Take notice

• 1 DT photo right for El Jem.

• 1 DT photo right for Kairouan

The numbers in brackets are the time spent at the stops !

.............................................................................................................

If you are determined to see the ampitheatre.

i would advise you organise a white tourist taxi for this journey.

It will be more comfortable and when and where you stop, and for how long, is your decsion ,not a tour guide/operator.

The white taxis are usually 8 seater jobs and comfy ;-)

We use them often when there.

I know you dont go till next year

But think on it

You dont say how many of you are going.

The more the merrier for sharing costs on this.

It will be a lot cheaper and more flexible than T/Cook or Thomson trip.

On the price list i have from Thomas Cook last week a half day trip to El Jem from our hotel at Skanes just south of Sousse was £27 adult, £13.50p child, Wednesday and Sunday,

It will be a different price from Hamammet but not much,

Hi Alan

A half day trip would not do it though (from Hammamet)

The example i gave is of course is not just for El Jem and its around 10hrs.

It will be double your price at least with Cook (from Hammamet)

Some quotes elsewhere on the forum suggest £50pp from Hammamet to El jem and Sousse with Cook

In reality, most of the trips are cheaper not doing it with Cook ;-)

PS

Am of course just quoting costs from websites

Maybe someone who has did the trip with Cook from Hammamet to El Jem will come on with a definite price !!;-)

9. Re: Getting to El Djem

You mentioned previously that from Sousse there is a half day trip to El Jem ?

It’s also available from Hammamet @£26.50 per person..

So for the above poster who may only wish to visit El Jem that’s probably the best bet.
