Parkersburg or Morgantown

My wife and I are taking a motorcycle trip to West Virginia in June of 2018 and are looking to stay in Parkersburg or Morgantown for 3 or 4 days. We dont have anything specific in mind just taking in the scenery and some sights. Any suggestions would be great, thanks

Any reason for choosing these two? Heading somewhere else as well? It is less than a 2 hour drive from one to the other so you could easily do both. But...for a motorcycle trip to WV I would recommend visiting Greenbrier, Pocahontas and Randolph (and surrounding) counties. This would include Lewisburg, Snowshoe Ski Resort (great in the summer months), and a couple of State Parks and National Forests. This would be on the eastern side of the state. Fayette County is great too...the New River Gorge Bridge, National Forest, lots of great hiking too. (a little more south-central in the state).

Thanks for the feed back. We don't a have a specific place in mind, we just kind of picked an area. If it is worth it we will definitely look into those placed and farther east.

I agree with Beach Lady- a trip like yours would be better focused on the smaller, more scenic towns and byways. Make your home base in Randolph, Pocahontas, or Tucker counties and branch out from there. You'll be glad you did!

If you decide to ride to Morgantown, go out to Cooper's Rock for a nice view. If you head towards Parkersburg, a trip out to North Bend State Park would be ok....lots of deer in the park. The ride from Clarksburg to Parkersburg in the spring when the trees are blooming is nice as well.

Sorry Beachlady, but I'm going to disagree with you on this one. Morgantown is the best destination in the state for a motorcycle trip. Certainly if you could wait until July, you would be joined by 40,000 other bikers for our huge festival, Mountainfest. Four day festival throughout all of Morgantown, featuring several outdoor concerts (headlined this year by supergroup Alabama). And there's a reason why 40K bikers come from all of the US to Morgantown for this festival.

Morgantown is the "hippest" place in the state, with literally 1000+ restaurants. Hip, cool bars, eclectic restaurants, festivals, fairs, wineries, breweries, live sports (pro baseball in the summer), riverfront concerts, boating, hiking, sight-seeing, arts and crafts... so much to do!

Also, Morgantown is a great hub for scenic drives through three states. Ohiopyle (small town built over waterfalls) in Pennsylvania is less than an hour away. Swallow Falls and Deep Creek Lake in Maryland are less than an hour away. Route 50 east is a very scenic drive from Bridgeport to Cathedral State Park. Blackwater Falls/ Canaan Valley are less than 2 hours away.

North, South, East, West... scenic drives and plenty to do in every direction. There certainly is no better place to make your home base in West Virginia for a motorcycle trip than Morgantown.

"There certainly is no better place <insert claim here>"

I'm always amazed at how people on the internet are so good at knowing what's exactly right for somebody else, even when that somebody else doesn't provide a lot of detail about what they're looking for.

Morgantown is definitely the best base for visiting Morgantown, but no one place is best for everybody who wants to visit some places that might be fairly close to Morgantown. I'd say the best place depends on the specific places or things someone is interested in seeing.

Or, since it's a motorcycle trip maybe the places they'd like to ride are pretty important. Different riders will have different interests, but if mountain riding and mountain scenery are important I'd definitely suggest south and/or east of the Parkersburg/Morgantown area.

"Blackwater Falls/ Canaan Valley are less than 2 hours away. "

They're a lot closer to Elkins, which is also a lot closer to Seneca Rocks, the Dolly Sods, The Cranberry Glades and Highland Scenic Highway. Elkins is almost exactly the same time to Fayetteville and the New River Gorge Bridge, and closer to Lewsburg. It's still just a hair over 2 hours to Ohiopyle

Of course it's entirely possible to spend a couple of nights in each of two different places.
