Trip June 2014 - 5 or 6 days

We are planning a one way trip across North dakota (we are then looping back through South Dakota)....in June next year.. We plan to spend about 5 or 6 days to drive across North Dakota,

We are in the initial stages of planning and so would like to know what else to consider, places to see; lodging recommendations (have listed our current thoughts)....We are having a family reunion in Nisswa, Minnesota (124 miles away from Fargo). We are starting from Gillette, Wyoming (after spending our first few days in Wyoming elsewhere)

1) Day One and Two: Drive 340ish miles to Theodore National Park - stay in area 2 nights

a) Is it best to stay in Watford (i.e. Watford Hotel) or Medora?

2) Day Three and Four: Drive 182 miles to Bismarck North Dakota - See Fort Mandan, North Dakota Heritage Center, Lewis and Clark Riverboat Cruise, Lincoln State Park, Capitol.

Stay at Best Western Ramkota Hotel

Day 5 - Drive to Fargo, stopping by Jamestown (102 miles away) to see Buffalo Museum; then on to Fargo100 more miles and see a movie at Fargo Theater. See plains Art museum or see it on day 6 on way before driving to Minnesota.

Stay in Fargo at

BEST WESTERN PLUS Kelly Inn & Suites

Day 6: Possibly see Plains Art Museum and drive to Minnesota

Is there anything more we should add to list (or suggest not seeing?)

Any place we should consider staying at (especially around Roosevelt National Park)

Any thing we should definitely do in North Dakota to make this a fun vacation?

we like about anything - active couple but plan more to see things than to take hikes, bikes, etc. in North Dakota - plan to do that in South Dakota part of trip. We are open to short hikes, etc. if its something great to see.

Thanks in advance.

Because of the oil boom in western North Dakota, your choice of where to stay on the west side will mostly be dictated by where you an get lodging. I'd probably try to stay in Medora.

If you are interested in man made structures you might want a drive north of I-94 to see Garrison dam on the Missouri river (about 60 miles if you take highway 49 through Beulah). This route will put you through some of the coal mining area of North Dakota. You might want to research to see if any of the power plants in that area still give tours.

While in Fargo, the Hjemkomst center is a good place to check out. You would take Main Ave. from the Kelly Inn east to 2nd St., turn left and then turn right on 1st Ave. Just after you cross the ricer the Hjemkomst Center will be on your left.

Over 50 hotels have opened in the last several years - most of them in Dickinson, Minot, Bismarck and Williston and several others in between. You should not have trouble finding a room.

In the North Unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, you will most often be looking down into canyons from the tops of high buttes. At the South Unit, you will be looking up...

If you stayed in Medora (South Unit) you could take in the Medora Musical and other entertainment and dining options. If you like to golf, you won't want to miss Bully Pulpit Golf Course. See www.Medora.com. Watford City's accommodations are a bit tougher to come by but the North Unit of the Theodore Roosevelt is still worth the drive. If you do take in the North Unit, be sure to stop by the Long X Trading Post Visitor Center in Watford City. They feature local history, a new oil industry exhibit and ICE CREAM.

You may also be interested in visiting (shopping) Scheels All Sports in Fargo. There is a ferris wheel inside the store and 80 stores within that store. You may want to stop at the Dakota Dinorsaur Museum and Ukranian Cultural Institute (both Dickinson). You can find more information about energy tours at: http://www.ndtourism.com/energy . You can also find sample North Dakota itineraries at: http://www.ndtourism.com/best-places .

Enjoy your trip!

Downtown Fargo is nice. There's lots of fun shops and restaurants there. If you walk up and down Broadway, where the Fargo Theatre is, you will find lots of shopping. Small shops also continue from Broadway to 9th St. on Main Ave. Some favorite restaurants of mine downtown are Spicy Pie ($), Taco Bros food truck ($), HoDo ($$$), Wurst Bier Hall ($), Wasabi ($$), and Mezzaluna ($$$, although they have happy hour where food and drinks are around $7). Be sure your movie is in the original part of the Fargo theatre, not the addition they built on. The original theatre is art deco. If you go to an event there most of the time they will have someone playing the Wurlitzer organ before it starts. In June there will be a good amount of events happening around the city. Check calendars at HPR1.com or pick up the High Plains Reader at any grocery store for free and browse their events pages.
