Home Base-Kennebunkport?

Hi,

Thinking of flying into Portland from NYC, renting a car and spending 3 or 4 nights.

We'd like to make this a coastal town exploring trip, would Kennebunkport be a good home base?

I believe Bar Har would be too far from Kennebunkport for a day trip not sure..

We don't mind staying in a different location each night.

any suggestions of good coastal towns to see and stay in?

Ogunquit would be a good base if you want to take trips to York, Portsmouth, Wells, Kennebunkport and maybe a lakes region (fall colors).

Kennebunkport is a little more of a distance on-and-off the freeway so it depends on what you plan to see and do from Kennebunkport I guess. I guess with 4 days you could fly into Portland , stay in the Wells/Ogunquit neighborhood and visit the surroundings one day. Visit York Portsmouth Kittery areas the 2nd d. Next day visit Kennebunkport and Cape Porpoise. Maybe work your way up towards Cape Elizabeth for your final evening, which isn't far from Portland airport for your flight home the next day. Inn by the sea is the only accomodation that I know of in Cape Elizabeth however and they often fill up early.

Is Ogunquit on the coast?

We love visiting Kennebunkport and to poke around the coastal area near there. One of our favorite day excursions is a drive to Freeport. We do a little outlet shopping, but also love to explore Wolfe's Neck State Park.

You'll be arriving at one of the most popular times to visit Maine as the fall foliage season arrives.....could make finding accommodations in some areas a challenge.

But yes, Kennebunkport would be a good location for exploring the southern Maine coast -- as already noted, it would give you access to everything from Kittery and Wells north to Portland.....

After that, a night in Brunswick or Rockland, north of Portland, would give you day-trip access to the coast between those two cities -- places like Boothbay Harbor, Pemaquid or Popham....drastically different coastline from what you'll see south of Portland.

And yes, Acadia/Bar Harbor would still be a lengthy day trip from there -- more time in the car than on the coast...

Day 3 could be spent checking out the Rockland/Rockport/Camden area..., and if you have trouble finding lodging there, Augusta is only an hour away and might offer more openings. Then you're just an hour down I-95 to the airport for your return flight home.

That would get you a look at the Maine coast from the Maine-New Hampshire border north as far as Camden-Rockland.....then you could check out Belfast-Bar Harbor-Acadia some other time.....when flying into Bangor instead of Portland might be a timesaver for you....
