Downeaster from Wells to Boston and back

I am in the early stages of planning the following family trip from Montreal:

Drive from Mtl to Wells on Monday Aug 20th.

Stay three nights at Wells or Ogunquit hotel. Take in the sights.

Leaving car at the train parking lot, take the Downeaster to Boston, leaving Wells around 9am.

Stay three nights in downtown Boston with no car.

Take in a Redsox game the day we arrive (1pm).

Take train north leaving Boston around 9:30am.

Collect car and drive home.

Qs: How far in advance should I book the train? Is Wells parking lot safe? Any other thoughts or comments?

I haven't heard of any issues with the Wells parking lot. If you plan to do a Sox game the day you arrive, take the earliest train possible. I have had zero luck with the Downeaster arriving on time lately. We will only take it if we have no definite plans in the morning or early afternoon. If you definitely want to ride the train, book your tickets in advance, especially for discounted fares.

If you want a mass transit option besides the train, C&J Trailways in Portsmouth, NH provides bus service to Boston multiple times daily. They have ample, safe parking and even have a valet parking option for very little money.
