Hi,

I'm sure you'll be able to travel soon!

Slovakia is an amazing country, but it doesn't really have any notable lakes, certainly not where I would travel all the way from Ireland.

There is a nice lake(Neusiedler See) about an hour drive from Bratislava Airport but:

1) It is in Austria.

2) Renting a car and driving would make your life much easier.

If you're interested in touring Slovakia I'd be happy to give you ideas, but if all you want is a quiet lakeside holiday there are much better placese to do that: Austria, Poland, Germany, Finland, Sweden, etc.

If you inisist on a lake in Slovakia you'll need to travel further from Bratislava.

Strbske Pleso is an Alpine lake in the High Tatras. It's beautiful, but small and very busy with tourists, but it's the easiest to reach without a car. Train all the way from Bratislava with only 1 change and the local train makes it easy to do daytrips.

Rather than look for a lake near Bratislava (the nearest one of any note within an hour is actually in Austria/Hungary - Neusiedlersee), get a train to the Tatra mountains and there are some beautiful lakes (e.g. Štrbské pleso) and scenery there. It doesn't cost much, and it is a nice journey. If you have 8 days to play with then there is plenty to see and do there, more so than in the surroundings of Bratislava.

For self catering, check out e.g. https://www.limba.com/en/accommodation_slovakia/vysoke-tatry.htm?uid=10149600165eda74f9f357d0.81194017 - you can play around with the locations. A car is helpful, but there is a little train that goes along the bottom of the mountains and connects all the main centres.

Hi,

Piestany is a spa with a long history and it's close to Bratislava.

Nice weather is hit or miss. In August it's most likely to be very hot and with little rain. Given that you're used to Irish weather you'll either love the sunny heat or suffer(but than staying in Piestany a pool is never far so you don't need to suffer).

Bon voyage!

Piestany is nice enough for a day or two, but I wouldn’t want to stop there for 8 nights

I would recommend looking at a base in the Tatra mountains, I think the suggestion of Strbske Pleso is a good one.

What kind of lake are you looking for? If you want a huge one, then advises above do apply, however, if you want a nice recreational area and a place to swim in, then Senec lake may be a good choice. It's easily accesible by train from Bratislava, ride takes only about 25 minutes and entrance to the lake area is right next to the Senec railway station :)

Slovakian smaller towns are nice and worth a visit or stay.

Have been in those -

Košice ( with its Cathedral ), Bardejov, Levoča, Banska Štiavnica, Kremnica etc.

We thought strbske pleso was great. the whole Tatras is fabulous and easy to visit using the mountain train. Slovakia is a fantastic country to visit. Very underrated.
