Ljubljana to Trieste - please advise...

Apologies for this if it is a repeated question but we are trying to plan a trip and this is the only part we are having difficulties with... Are there many trains which travel direct from Ljubljana - Trieste? Would a bus be a better option? We hope to spend a night or two at Lake Bled, is it possible to travel from here to Trieste? And finally, would a taxi be very expensive from Bled to Trieste? Thank you.

There is no direct train from Ljubljana to Triest, only buses or by train till Sezana and then continue by bus (good idea is just to read a recent topic - tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g274873-i1320-k530… )

In case of Bled-Trieste, then I would advise to go by train to Nova Gorica (a few per day) and then continue from Italian side of the town (Gorizia) to Trieste, it's only an hour by train from there

As of December 2011 there are no trains running between Slovenia and Italy directly, there are however two buses each way. Alternatively you can take a train from Ljubljana to Sežana (the last stop before the border) and then take a taxi to Trieste.

To get from Lake Bled to Trieste, you have to either go back via Ljubljana, or take a more scenis option, if you have the time. It starts by taking the train at Bled Jezero (not Lesce Bled, the station for trains to Ljubljana) to Nova Gorica, then you have to either take a bus, taxi or walk across the border to Gorizia Centrale and take a train there to Trieste.

Thank you both for your prompt replies. The bus is so early in the morning, not ideal. May have to look at getting a taxi, think the cost may be approx €130.00 but it would be direct. Pity but thanks again x

Just take a train Ljubljana to Sezana, easy and scenic - and just 9 euros. Journey 2 hours, safe and comfy, trains leave every 2-3 hours, www.bahn.de (English button top right)

Sezana is 3 miles across the border to Villa Opicina in Italy, a taxi costs 12 euros.

You could take the taxi another few miles into Trieste but personally I'd take the historic tram, 1.10 euros, runs every 20 minutes, a unique experience and a Trieste institution - it becomes a funicular down the escarpment.

You didn't say if driving was out of the question--we've been doing that a lot because of the awkward train and bus schedules; it has allowed us a lot of flexibility when we had assumed we would be taking more public transportation. it's usually cheaper too (but we are a family of 4).

Thank you for your replies. No we do not want to drive, we look for the easier way out to be honest! We have organized a taxi company to collect us at Lake Bled and then on to Trieste (Intertours) for a reasonable price so happy with that. Looking forward to the trip now.....

Hi there Aventine,

Just reading your post about driving from Slovenia into Italy.

Did you hire a car ? If so from where? We're thinking about hiring a car from Vienna for a week to do North Italy. Is that more expensive? We are at the initial planning stages of our trip!

Cheers

Susan

Hi bulldogs fans: and am living in Piran after spending the last many years in Hungary primarily dealing with transporting tourists around central europe so trains, planes, cars, busses are my favourite topics. As everyone above mentioned the bus trains situation here in slovenia is on the one side clean and modern but on the other side whoever made up the schedules and timetables probably never travelled by train or bus themselves!4 Anyway car rental in Vienna, the austrian companies in the airport are very expensive, and many clients use Hungarian or Slovakian rent a car agencies, usualy about one third cheaper, with identical modern car fleets as the austrian companies. The only difference as you leave the baggage claim area in the airport a driver awaits you with your name on a sign, takes you out to the parking lot, and minutes later your on the road! Counter this with an austrian company where you walk up to a rental counter, fill out documents, are given the keys and told your car is somewhere out in the large rent a car lot, find it and have a nice day! So actualy having someone escort me and explain certain functions of the car to me while paying alot less sounds apealing. I will be happy to recomend some companies just write the amount of people, and size of car, transmision choice automatic or manual, as not all companies have all the categories of car.

Hi Peter!

Thanks for your prompt reply. Great info from first hand experience!

Ok- The type of vehicle for 4 adults, we require is probably an auto trans, medium sedan/SUV with Satellite Navigation.

We will need to drop the car back in Zagreb.

Thanks so very much for your time!

Cheers!
