Tallin,Riga and vilnius

I am planing a trip from 20 August to 29 August 2018 to the above countries,

I am flying in to Vilnius and out of tallin or vice versa depending. On the flights.

I ve read that Riga and Vilnius has a lot to offer and so does tallin.

I hope to arrive 20 August to Vilnius stay 3 nights, train or bus to Riga stay 3 nights and then bus or train to Tallinn for 3 nights and then fly back.

I am into historical places, not into beaches or pubs .

Is this a good distribution of my time .

Pls help.

Thanks so much.

Regds ysh.

I think time distribution is about right. You can go to Trakai and Kernave from Vilnius, from Riga to Turaida/Sigulda. You can stop in Hill of Crosses on a way to Riga from Vilnius.

There are no trains between the capitals, but good connections by bus, check :

I suggest you do some research of places and make a list of museums/sights you would like to see, if you need to adjust time allocation:

Enjoy your planning!

Thank you so much endis for your reply and the websites for booking buses. I shall have a look again at the 3 countries and make a list of what I want to see and readjust my time.

Thanks

I would like to rethink about my itinwry as now I only have 8 days.

May not have enough time to see all 3 countries and wonder which one I should give up.

I can fly from Dublin to Riga by Ryan air arriving 20 August at 2215 so will stay in Riga for 3 nights.

Is it possible to take a bus on the 23 Aug to tallin just overnight? Is it worth it?

24 August will fly from tallin to Vilnius by Baltic air for 4 nights and then fly back to Dublin on the 28 Aug..

Or will I just give up tallin and go another time and spend my time between Riga and Vilnius?

Ryan air fly from Vilnius to Dublin for 143 euro one way.

Hope someone can advise me.

Thanks

My other alternative with better and cheaper flight options would be to go in sept.

Fly Dublin to Vilnius 18 sept arriving 2230 for only 50 euro direct.

Spend 3 nights

21 sept bus to Riga for 3 nights

24 sept bus from Riga to tallin for 2 nights

26 sept fly back to Dublin leaving 1500 for 42 euro.

Would sept be a good time to visit these 3 countries?

Hope someone can give me an idea,

nobody can predict the weather so far, but September is not a bad time to travel in Baltics. I would take a chance in September, you can have periods of pleasant weather as well.

I've looked into Vilnius events for September, we will have European heritage days and Nations fair in Vilnius September 14-16, it will be a lot happening in the city, fun to be during those days, maybe check arrival Vilnius around these dates ?

but as i said, in general it's not bad in September.

Thank you endis. I may change to sept but I can only arrive 18 sept. Don't mind if it's quiet I just want to see historical buildings .as long as public transport is good that's ok.

Thanks Regds ysh

I cannot comment about historical places, since I myself am a nature person. But I can tell about transport from Riga to Estonia. I'll just copy+paste my comment from a different thread, it should explain it all... :)

_______

You get the train ticket at pv.lv. From Riga to Valga. But You also can get it in train station or the train. It doesn't matter, because it is without numbered seats. So basically get to the train in good time, then You'll have a seat.

At the train station You can pay by cash or card. In train itself, cash.

Train goes twice a day. Morning. Evening.

And in Valga You can take train and bus further, where You need. Tartu and etc.

Everything should be very simple. I know, I've done it for years.

_______

I personally would recommend to spend a day or two in Tartu. I absolutely love it. For some reason I like it more than Tallinn. The town itself is kind of pretty... I was there last time in 2nd October. Had a few day trip from Tallinn to Valga/Valka, then further into countryside. Was windy. But not very cold. But needed raincoat and a scarf..

You can check airbaltic.com for flights between Baltics, tickets can be as cheap as 28 EUR between capitals and flight takes like 35 minutes. It is a long time before trip, there must be some dates where flights for 30 EUR or less are available.
