Take Rt 22 west, it's shorter. If you go via Rt 52 it will take you longer. Unless you want to sightsee along the way.

From San Juan:

Take route 22 west to route 2 west. Pass the towns of Aguadilla & Aguada. (do not take road 115 in Aguadilla). Stay on route 2 south. Pass road 402. Take the next road to the right: road 115. Follow road 115 towards the town of Rincon.

If you are renting a vehicle equipped with an AUTOEXPRESO TAG and take PR 52, you will be charged a $3.95 per day convenience fee up to a maximum of $16.95 plus the cost of the tolls. There is no way to pay cash when the vehicle is equipped with this device and it will be automatically activated when you pull up to the toll booth.

Rt.52 will take more time, if you wish to arive in Rincon with the least amount of time driving, then follow : Take route 22 west to route 2 west. Pass the towns of Aguadilla & Aguada. (do not take road 115 in Aguadilla). Stay on route 2 south. Pass road 402. Take the next road to the right: road 115. Follow road 115 towards the town of Rincon.

Thanks everyone. I wasn't sure if the traffic on 22 warranted a different route. As for the AutoExpress and the convenience fee: won't we get hit with that either was since 22 is a toll road? My understanding is that once the transponder gets used - even once - we are on the hook for the duration of the rental. Is it worth the $2/day to zip through the tolls?

PR 22 is also a toll road, however, they have cash lanes which will not activate the AutoExpress. Sometimes those lanes can be long and slow, so depending on your patience, the $2/day is up to you.

I''m assuming you mean "Rincon". It's 3 hours each way if there are no delays.

June 15 2014:

Left the Blue Boy Inn at 7am from Rincon headed to PR SJC airport. The trip was 2h45mins using the cash express lanes. However the GPS using google maps completed failed within view of the SJC airport. The construction barricades made it difficult. The trip from SJC down to Rincon Beach on June 8 was 2h30min leaving the San Juan area around 6:45pm.

The infrastructure is sorely lacking. No overpass bridges spanning major intersections created many delays.

Power outages created problems with traffic lights not working. Thanks for the replies.
