There is so much to do in Rotorua, we ended up staying 4 days and still didn't get to do everything we wanted.

Some of the highlights for us were :

Wai-o-tapu thermal wonderland - if you get there for around 10am you can see the lady knox gyser being set off. The colours of the other pools are wonderful and the hot mud pools on the road to Wai-ou-tapo are amazing. The park is located south of Rotorua on highway 5.

Rainbow Springs & The Kiwi Encounter (both on the same site)again on highway 5, was an excellent place to visit if you are into conservation. It was fascinating to hear about all that is being done to preserve the Kiwi bird, and the staff there are really good fun.

Next door to Rainbow Springs is the gondola and luge rides. You get an amazing view of Rotorua from the skyline resturant and the gift shop.

You can also have a go at Zorbing in Rotorua, a quick but hilarious way to spend 100 dollars very quickly!! Remember to take a change of underware if you do have a go at this.

If you can spend the night in Rotorua Tamaki Maori Village is an intersting place to visit. Buses pick up from various accommodation in town and take you out to the village where you spend the evening watching a maori display, the visit finished with a hangi (traditional meal)then you get bussed back to your accommodation.

Alon with this site, we found the Rough Guide really helpful in finding places to visit.

Have a great time.

Websites you may find useful for planning one day in Rotorua are;

www.mitai.co.nz (recommend the combo tour)

www.geyserland.co.nz

www.tepuia.co.nz

www.paradisevalleysprings.co.nz

www.polynesianspa.co.nz

www.whiteisland.co.nz (day trip to off shore volcano with shuttle bus from Rotorua)

www.riverjet.co.nz (another trip away from Rotorua)

www.waimungu.co.nz

www.agrodome.co.nz

Kuirau Park is almost central city and is free to wlak around and see the steaming lake, mud pools, gardens.

That is probably only half of the activies and attractions in Rotorua so you must realise that one day is not going to be long enough. A lot depends on ages, fitness levels and how strongly you crave adrenalin fixes. There are also tandem sky diving, luging, biking, off road four wheel driving, horse riding, bush walks, museums.......etc.

Hi John,

If you decide to stay a night try the Executive on Fenton, fantastic motel, 4 Qual mark. Each room has it's own hot tub in the yard!.

Its on Fenton Street, the main street in Rotorua.

We loved it.

We went to the Mitai Hangi & Concert which we booked through the Isite on Fenton Street, we also got a free trip to Hells Gate, hot mud pools. The Hangi was excellent, the coach picks you up from your hotel and drops you back again, a night to remember.

Happy holiday

We were there last summer and couldn't believe how much there was to do or see. I see no one mentioned the giant redwood forest on the edge of town...that should be a no-miss visit. No need to spend hours there, a simple hour walk would work. Zorbing down the hill, while expensive, is totally memorable and wild. If you're into experiences that will stay with you, I can highly recommend the following:

The Red Wood Forest

The park in the center of town

Zorbing (use the money you saved from the first two freebies)

Mitai Hangi which gets you into Rainbow Springs

and the Kiwi Encounter.

Don't cut your visit short! If you can, try to get to the bay of plenty and Briar's Beachside Horse Treks on New Dicks Beach on your way in or out of town...totally undescribably gorgeous and guaranteed memory makers!http://www.tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i16159-New_Zealand_For_All_Ages.html
