Hi eddie

If you are okay on boats .. a good way to see the Whitsundays is to spend part time sailing the islands and part time on HI if thats the island you have decided on

There are heaps of suggested boats on the Whitsunday forum which cater to all ages and budgets .. skip or sailbabe are the locals who can advise

However I know that not everyones idea of a holiday is being on the water 24 hours a day

If you stay on HI for 10 days you can have a good mixture of sight seeing and lazy days by the pool or beach .. you will have plenty of time to explore the islands and get some good R & R

There is a large choice of accommodation on HI.. from palm bungalows to hotel rooms to self catering apartments to luxury houses plus of course the Beach Club

The Beach Club has no children allowed and is situated right on Catseye Beach .. it has its own restaurant and infinity pool .. the rooms are nicely furnished

Of course if money was no object Qualia is a 5+ accommodation but at about $1600.00 a night, very expensive

The Reef Hotel is the large building most commonly seen on HI .. this has been recently refurbished and the top floors have fantastic views

Then there are the 2 & 3 bedroom apartments ... these all have 2 bathrooms, fully equipped kitchens and laundry, patio's or balconies and all are built with the view a major attraction plus king size beds with ensuites

The apartments also have a 4 person golf buggy included which is the main form of transport on the island

So the choice is hotel rooms if you want 24 hour room service, daily room cleaning plus all the benefits of a large hotel

If you self cater you have the advantage of maybe preparing some meals .. lots of apartments have b b ques on the balcony ... or you can order pizza's if you dont feel like going out

All apartments have their own swimming pools and many have electric b b ques beside the pool

If you stay in an apartment you can still use all the facilities on the island but you cant room charge unless of course you book through HI Resort but then you pay a lot more money

HI has a mixture of holiday makers and those that live full time on the island .. as such you have a supermarket, chemist, bakery, hairdresser, doctor etc. everything that you find in a small town

Check out the official www.hamiltonisland.com.au site and there are a full list of activities both on island and off island and restaurant times

You can do snorkelling tours, visit the Reef, visit Whitehaven, fly in a helicopter over heart reef, take a seaplane to Whitehaven, catch a ferry across to the mainland which is a good idea if you are staying on HI for 10 days .. go over for the day and hire a car and have a look around

You can also get on an off the ferry which visits some of the other islands

Plenty of information on TA .. check out some of the reviews posted by other first time visitors.. very interesting and informative

Also check out google earth .. a fabulous view of the island is shown and you can zoom right in and see catseye beach at low tide ..

Good luck

Abbey

Hi Abby, what is the best way to find out more about the ferry that visits other islands as mentioned in your last post. Is there a website with departure times from HI etc?

Hi pinkzinc!

There are two companies you can use to get to/from Hamilton Island and the surrounding islands.

1 - Fantasea Cruises

2 - Cruise Whitsundays

Both can be found online with all the details of times and prices.

Hi eddieoffshore

I have just returned from Hamilton Island. You may want to look at an apartment / villa, due to the fact that you are staying for a long duration you will be able to have a self contained room with kitchen etc. There is a supermarket on the island so you can buy some groceries and cook some meals in your room rather than eat out every day. There are a variety of websites that have privately owned villa's (which is where i stayed this time).

The supermarket is pretty pricey, but you can also arrange to get groceries delievered from the mainland prior to your arrival.

cheers!
