What is Sydney like on NY Day?

Is everything open or closed? Is the city a mess from the previous night? Just trying to plan what to do that day on our vacation.

it's usually very quiet, a few stray drunks around. Lots of things are open (we found it a great day to go to the zoo!) but restaurants etc charge a surcharge for meals.

Things are cleaned up pretty quickly, so there shouldn't be too much mess. For Australians, New Year's Day is usually pretty quiet - a chance to recover from the night before and, if the weather is favourable, to head to the beach.

Cleaners usually get to work pretty quickly. You will find revellers still making their way from party venues well into the morning, but its not usually anything bothersome.

New Years Day is a public holiday, so public transport will be running on the Sunday/public holiday timetable, and you might find that lots of stores in the city centre are closed. The major tourist attractions should still be open (best to check, though) as it is the peak tourist season in Sydney.

Heading to the beach will probably be high on many people's lists of things to do. If you do too, I would suggest steering well clear of the larger 'party beaches' and trying some of the smaller ones (e.g. Bronte, Clovelley even Maroubra - all in the east; or, if you can get there, Freshwater or the other beaches to the north of Manly.

I imagine in the city and main tourist spots there are many restaurants open, but in everyday suburbs many places are closed.

Also depending on what the weather is like.

The city will be fairly clean,as workers go through it during the night. You may find some hard core revellers still around,or crashed somewhere. The beach is where most people hang out,but if last year (or this year)is anything to go by,then places like Bondi are packed.

Public transport runs on a Sunday timetable, but most things are open.

Maybe best to make an early start and beat the crowds.
