Crossing border from Lappeenranta to Russia

Hey all.

I am gonna fly to Lappeenranta and then cross the border to go to Saint Petersburg. does anyone know if it is possible to go by public transportation to Nuijamaa which is the Russian border and take another bus/car sharing from there to Saint petersburg?

thanks a lot.

I'd say the best options by public transport are:

- direct buses from Lappeenranta to St. Petersburg. At least Ecolines and Sovavto operate such buses

- taxi to Vainikkala (28 km from Lappeenranta), where the Helsinki - St. Petersburg trains stop. Taksi Saimaa has a fixed price 15 € / person for the taxi ride, if it is ordered in advance

Thanks a lot for your reply

Is it possible to cross the border of Vainikkala by foot? or should take a train on Finnish side and have the passport check inside the train?

Yes, afaik you can cross the border as a pedestrian, but why on earth would you like to do that unless there is someone waiting for you at the Russian side of the border?

And no, you can't Cross Vainikkala border by foot as there is no actual crossing, just a train station.

You cannot cross the Russian border on foot, at least not to the other direction, but I would assume the same applies from Finland to Russia as well.

The red tape in Vainikkala is really smooth as your visa and passport are checked on a moving train. Crossing thru Nuijamaa can take a long time depending on traffic and on the mood of the customs officials.

Will be following this post.. we were just in Karelia and absolutely loved it and we want to return, we would hire a car and drive from Lappeenranta cross the border and head north. Not sure of visa implications when going by car

Sooooo how tricky is it drive across the border? We are two people Australian passport and Finnish with permanent residency in Australia, we got visas last time and just as you said it was smooth sailing on the train, we loved it and want to go back next summer taking a hire car from Finland and turning north after the border. st Petersburg was amazing but driving there was a challenge so we thought we would just avoid it. Karelia here is a bit of an unknown destination, our visa ($400 au) required us to say entry and exit point and a letter of invitation from host accommodation. If you have any hints for easier travel we would appreciate it.

There's practically zero chance of finding a car rental company which would let you take a car to Russia. Tak a train to Vyborg and rent one there. Otherwise crossing the border by car is really straightforward, just requires some paperwork and proof of valid insurance.

Thanks for this Vyborg would be okay as we could head north from there and avoid congestion of St Petersburg. I had just wondered about the car hire as we have just spent time in Espoo and had a car fitted with an alarm because it had been taken to Russia. Thanks for your advice.
