Lalibela vs churches of Tigray

If any of you, my fellow travellers, have done both the Lalibela churches and the rock hewn churches of Tigray, which would you recommend if you had to choose. I have been reading about both and other forums seem to suggest the churches in Tigray and the surrounds are better than in Lalibela. We will be in the far north as we are going to Danakil so could by-pass Lalibela altogether if Tigray is better.

Thoughts anyone?

Hi Cathy,

I noticed you have another post outlining your proposed itinerary. I spent 24 days in Ethiopia in September last year and found it difficult putting an itinerary together as info on travel times between places was not readily available. We visited Harer and did a loop of the south, then did the basic north loop. We stayed in Lalibela, drove north to Aksum, stayed o/n at Mekele and called in at a couple of Tigray churches. You have to hike in to a lot of them. It is a full day's drive from Lalibela to Mekele which I believe is the jump off point for Danakil - not really sure how long you need to to Danakil but I think you need to allow 3-5 days.

It's another full day's drive to Aksum from Mekele. All three cities have airports but flights are not necessarily direct.

I live in Sydney and would be happy to discuss your plans if you PM me maybe we could arrange to chat by phone if you wish. I think your schedule is a little ambitious. We did a private tour arranged on the internet with a local Ethiopian operator who I would highly recommend. I knew very little at the outset and it took me weeks and a lot of research to organise it, but it was really worth the effort. Ethiopia is the world's best kept travel secret IMO!

You may already be gone and this may be too late, but I was in Ethiopia in March and I would say do not miss Lalibella. If you are in very good shape and interested in climbing, the rock hewn churches of Tigray are wonderful, but many of them are in quite remote locations and require climbing up sheer rock faces barefooted. So, if you are not in great physical condition, it may be difficult for you to see many of the churches in Tigray. Lalibella is much more accessible to ordinary people who are not young and athletic. You still have to do some walking up and down, but not climbing barefoot up sheer rock cliffs. Lalibella is pure magic in my books.
